Questions about PS2 model #s I have 3 slim PS2s I acquired recently and I don't really know much about the different models. I recently read I could take the laser from my 55001 PS1 and put in my 10001 PS1 so I want to learn what I can about my PS2s before I sell them, mod or trade them. Here are the models... MODEL NO. SCPH-77001 -Silver MODEL NO. SCPH-75001 -Black MODEL NO. SCPH-70001 -Black Those are the models, I did the colors for myself so I would know which is which. Let me know as much as you can about them, I want to learn as much as possible and they are all slim PS2s. Also tell me about what mod chips I should use and how I could best utilize my PlayStation 2. I'm guessing the 77001 is the best and that is what I should keep??
Most slim models use KHM-430 (PVR-802W compatible) laser, some SPU-3170G if I remember correctly. SCPH-70001 and maybe SCPH-75001 can burn laser coil. So they need laser fix. SCPH-70001 can be modded to use HDD like fat models. 77001 is the best, yes. Unless you want solder HDD to SCPH-70001.
I have a 3001 fat model, I think thats what it is I dont have it next to me right now. So I wont be modding a slim model for a that. It's good to know it is possible, but the slim with a hard drive attached to it probably looks stupid. Could you post a pic of what it would look like?

You could also install a hdcombo(v12/13 only) or hd pro kit(any version slim). The modbo 4.0 modchip works with both mods. It is actually a requirement for the hd pro kit. However, you can just use fmcb with the hdcombo kit. No modchip needed for that one. I have 1 hdcombo with a dms4 pro se installed which is amazing. Also have a hdcombo kit with just fmcb which works fine since your most likely gonna play games off a harddrive anyways. I did have a hd pro kit installed in a scph-75000 but have since sold it. These are the hdpro's that work on these version slims's. They come with the modbo 4.0 too http://www.psxboy.com/1188_HD-PRO-for-PSTWO-SCPH-90XXX.html http://www.psxboy.com/1212_HD-PRO-for-PSTWO-SCPH-7xxxx.html This is the hdcombo kit which you can find from some chinese supplier's now..knock off's but they still work the same. They do not have the extra fans install but you can buy them seperate and add the fans yourself. You would need to buy a modbo 4.0 or siilar modchip for ps-2 seperate...I recomend a matrix Infinity or dms4 pro se or lite. http://www.neoasic.com/hdcombo.htm http://www.alibaba.com/showroom/hd-combo-ps2.html You can ask to buy 1 or 2 as a sample so you don't have to buy 10 or more. They may charge you a little more though.
Dont those HDD Pros run via like 8 data lines from the bios? Which would make them pretty slow for using a hard drive..
I prefer the hdcombo kit. It is the better choice. But the one hdpro kit I installed did work fine. I didn't notice any slow down's. But I did notice with some games like god of war there was interference(crackling sound's). I think that may have been because of chip placement though. I never did figure that out. Not all games had this issue though. This was only games played from the harddrive and not by disc. Here's a little more info on it to read. http://psx-scene.com/forums/f85/hdpro-all-ps2-slim-hdd-62321/ http://psx-scene.com/forums/f110/hd-pro-ps2-slim-97925/ I actually installed all the wires so the modchip was able to function to its full potential.
The install guide hooks a FFC ribbon onto a board that solders onto a Modbo4. The W wire goes to this new board and everything else to the Modbo. Not exactly sure how it works from there but I can't imagine it's fast.
View attachment 8671 I actually installed every wire on the one I did so backups would work too. It does work. Maybe not as good as a hdcombo kit but it works for 70 xxx version and 90 xxx version slim ps-2's. You have to use there modified version of hdloader too.
Open PS2 Loader supports that garbage too. But I would really stay away of it. Too slow for a LOT of games. Borderline faster than USB. I think Ethernet on Open PS2 Loader would compare to this loading method really. You're a lot better procuring an earlier PS2 and using a harddrive.
