I'm trying to play my import white japanese system, and the CD drive doesn't seem to hardly ever want to spin. When it does and boots a game, it's very loud.. sounds like it's scratching the disk but it's not.

Any ideas on what to do, guys?

    Thanks

When I close down the lid just before it snaps closed, just enough to make the drive spin, it doesn't seem she wants to spin. If I do that, it makes a loft grinding (very soft) noise, as if she's trying to spin but something isn't quite catching.

I really hope this system isn't scrap....

Sounds like the spindle motor is going. Try to push the spindle down back onto the motor... sometimes they come lose.

Push down on the little circle in the center of where the discs rests on. I believe that's what ASSEMbler was getting at.

Location: AtariAge, huh? got any cool stuff? What's your handle over there?

Uh...ok, i did that.. now the spindle has clicked in about 1/4 inch down, to the point the thing that grips the cd is now the same height as the base of the tray.. crap. What now?

Good news! It's working now! :D

I figured out by studying it with it's top casing off (btw it's REALLY clean inside this thing), that the laser was trying to go up and down to read the disk. After I raised the spindle, it was too high, too low and the laser would tap the cd and not load either. Taking a wrench and grabbing the spindle to gradually push it down about 1/16th of an inch at a time, I finally hit the sweet spot. It's about 1/32th of an inch above flush with the black laser casing. Bingo, I held down my finger to simulate the door was closed, and the game loaded beautifully.. the Saturn making a nice soft pur :D.

I'm so happy right now, you have no idea... and very relieved. Next up on my Saturn collection is the skeleton one. Can you tell I love Saturn? haha.

You love Saturn? Might I ask what models you have, there are a few that I don't have docs or BIOS on. (I have contacts for the various rare ones, but still)
