yep , i was thinking about that and , well, everyone (me counted) said that sony destoyed the 2d era, but is it really true? i mean , the first generation of psone titles where 2d titles , alot of rpg where made in 2d for ps ( tale of desteny , ...) and other one made a good twist of 2d and 3d (wild arms,...., and we could even say final fantasy ) somes platform games where made too: rayman , tomba (well...3d with a gameplay of 2d) . gex, oddwolrd , ....

sony of america have accepted alot of 2d games. so , who kill the 2d?
its not sega for sure, they always wanted to go further , but the saturn is the king of the 2d. what's about nintendo ? mmmm....they seam to be implicated in that ( we aren't obligeted to be sherlock holmes to dubitate that that 3-2=1....)
they invented the 3d joystick , a first in gaming, sega and sony made the step after. they made alot of 3d games , 2d games for the n64 can be counter with one hand if i'm right.

mmm......nintendo is a big suspect , isn't it? what do you think watson?
haven'T they push sony and sega in this adventure?

I don't know if this is right, but I heard it was difficult to do 2D on the N64.

The N64 was a complex machine from what i understand, and it was difficult to work with. I don't think Nintendo did it on purpose, they just wanted a poweful machine to compete with the Playstation. Of course we all know, Sega thought 3D was an expensive fad, so they worked on the best 2D technology ever, Sony proved them wrong with the Playstation, it was easy to program for and the system was cheap, and at the time it produced some good 3D graphics. I would not say Nintendo would be charged with the death of 2D because they stuck with the SNES for a while, it just seemed like it took them forever to get into the next gen war with there N64. They worked on new ways to make 2D look even better with games like Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario RPG.

it's true that nintendo support 2d again , with the gba . but we can't really say that sony killed the 2d too. maybe a mix of nintendo and sony?

    2d died

2d died because of technological advancement. There is no single company who really killed it but one thing is for sure, the reign of arcades ended with the advent of 3d technology because it was so expensive and people wre not interested in 2d anymore. Actually if you think about virtually every company that made a 3d arcade/console/PC game in the early to mid 90's is responsible because it made Joe Sixpack think " ooo wow it's 3d therefore it must better than 2d!"

Arcades are dieing down due to the fact the home technology has surpassed it so fast, people no longer had to go to the arcade to have the experiance since consoles were able to produce the same graphics and sound or even better then the arcade, dreamcast was the first system to be powerful enough to deliver the arcade experiance.

    Arcades

Arcades were virtually extinct here several years before the DC (mid 90's) because there was/is no money in arcades anymore and the machines were too expensive. In the 90's the machines were by and large a fair bit cheaper than they are now so the machines could turn profit faster but machines cost several grand these days and take forever to make a profit (unless situated in movie theatres etc where there is lots of traffic)

2d is still very very alive on both the Gba and ps2.Take examples such as Gradius 5,Contra;shattered soldier, and a few more fighters and stuff, and the countless hundreds of gba titles in 2d and you can never be stuck to find a good new 2d game to find.

It is only dead to those who do not or are not willing to buy the hardware to play 2d games.Simple as that my dear Watson.Elementary my boy, elementary. :butthead:

Well, 2D is not completely dead, but it is not what it used to be. The GBA is nice, a great system with some of the greatest games. On home consoles, however, if you want a 2D game, you really only have two choices. Fighting games and shooters. Paper Mario looks to be good, and Lets not forget about Sonic Collection and Mega Man Collection on the GC, but other than that, there is not much else.
