Many people may know that I formatted my Hard Drive a few weeks back to get rid of a nasty problem. Since then my PC has been great until this morning :angry Last night I shut the PC as normal. This morning I booted it up only to find that Windows thought it would be great to change the resolution to the lowest possible with only 16 colours. "Hmm, that's odd" I thought. So I headed off to the Control Pannel to change the settings. But Windows thought that it would be fun to tell me that this was the max resolution that my PC could handle. So I reset the PC hoping that all would return back to normal. So back comes on Windown but this time the bastard won't even boot up. It says that there is an error with the powrprof.dll file then just hangs. All I can do is move a mouse cursor about the screen. So I reset about 5 times without anything happening. So then I try to start windows up in "SAFE MODE". It worked but being safe mode there are no CD drive or mouse support. So I tried to install my graphic drivers but then found out that you can't add or check hardware in safe mode plus the drivers are on a CD anyway which can't be used. "OK" I thought, I'll run SPY BOT to check if there are any nasty software causing all this tropuble. Spybot found 2 problems but because of no mouse support I couldn't click on the "FIX PROBLEMS" button. So after 1 hour of pissing about with the safe mode options I decide that Windows just isn't going to work. Time for DOS ! I delete the entire Windows directory which seemed to take forever. Next I have to reinstall Windsows. After that I install the graphic drivers, PCI cards (5 of them) and other drivers. "Great" I thought, finally ready to use the PC. But oh no. Because I deleted Windows it now thinks that I have no program files. I was really beginging to get pissed off by this point. So I thought "Fuck them for now, let's get the mail checked". So I doubble clicked on outlook express only to be told that it had an error and wouldn't load. FUCK !! So I tried to log on to the net but all I got was some shite about the internet wizard not working. DOUBLE FUCK !! So, I now have to install Bloody Windows again !! Another 40 minutes later it finally works but wait, now I have to install all the windows updates and sercurity checks. :smt067 So basically since 1pm till 8:30pm I have had to put up with nothing but shite from Windows. That's why I hate Microsoft's Guts !! Now I'll check out the board then reinstall Adobe, goldwave, cakewalk, DIVX player, Winamp, etc......... :smt022 THE BASTARDS !!!! Yakumo
Sounds like typical windows 98 to me. Just install windows xp professional (not the crappy home version) and you should have a lot less hassle.
Even from the point of view of a server, if you don't want to go to linux, you really should be running XP or 2K. Both have far longer uptimes before a restart is required, and can cope with programs crashing without Windows crashing too.
i'm still having non-sense troubles on XP Pro... and its not because i don't know what i do... Miccrosoft is really shit. and i wonder why they are number one.... oh yeah, i know why, because of their marketing and illegals concurancy. if it wasn't of that , they would be last.
Have you checked your drive for errors ? maby you have some bad sectors and thats why files get lost of corupt so soon/often ?
Try any old Linux distribution for a while. After spending 6 hours trying to install an application, and looking for ANY documentation that doesn't need a doctorate to understand, you will welcome Windows with open arms! But yeah, get rid of '98, it is one of the better Windows, but its age is a danger now, as its no longer supported!
First of all, your video card is what probably caused it. Second of all, pressing the TAB button lets you go from button to button, so you could've selected that "Fix Problems" button. On top of that, if you have the first Win98, then that's your problem, you should have 98SE. Overall, upgrade to XP Pro. That is if you want to play all the PC games out there AND run about 98% of all software out on the market.
Yakumo...I have installed Win2k twice and XP on the same machine...if one instance bombs out I just boot up the other and it gives me email/web access until I can be bothered to fix it.....just a thought...
I know that the TAB key moves from button to button and so on. I'm not that stupid :smt042 THe thing is that the TAB option doesn't work with all buttons on all programs. Spy Boy is one of them and my FLETS ADSL Login is another. By the way, I do run win98se not the normal win98. I want to trade my English WIN XP Pro for a Japanese one but nobody has it. The English language one is no good for a Japanese PC Too many crazy keyboad mistakes and some confliction with a couple of things when installing it. Yakumo
It's not that simple. You see my PC has a Japanese Bios and English XP notices it when installing and comes up with all sorts of crap about the PC having a non compatable language setting. English WinXP Pro will run on my system but even after changing the keyboard layout to any of the many Japanese settings, there is always something that won't work or in the wrong place. Yakumo
Damn Yakumo, you and windows just don't seem to mix. Can't you flash your bios and install and english version, or something to that effect? I'm no super master hacker or anything. Of course, you could always just buy a motherboard from overseas and rebuild your computer. But yes, get rid of 98- I keep one machine with it so I can play old DOS games, but it's not good for much else. Windows seems to have a half life, that every X numbers of months/years you have to go throguh this bullshit and reinstall. To it's credit I've had XP up for over a year and haven't had to reinstall yet.
Well, in fact the definition of "half life" would suggest that every X periods of time it would become twice as fscked up as it was before.... which is kind of applicable :smt043
