This sounds like an evolution for the series; since it appears that each mercenary may now shoot in 360 degrees a la Equilibrium, grapple people, beat the crap out of them and throw them in a fire, and dodge in a Max Payne fashion.

I imagine it would play more like 10.000 Bullets, rather than a DMC game.

Also, from the interview with Stan Liu (From the now disbanded Kronos Digital Entertainment) from the third link:

"I think we have the best of both worlds: the lush, pre-rendered backgrounds without any limitations, with some impressive 3D backgrounds that allow freedom of movement."

Apparently, the transition between the two styles is seamless-- according to what the article's writer/bastard who play tested this says, anyway. The aesthetic aspect certainly has improved. I mean just look at the bottom right picture.

What a huge change visually from the first two games! For those unfamiliar with the first one, that location started with this:

and that was some sight to behold in a PSX game. I remember the first day I played it; The feeling was not too different from the first time gamers saw Halo or Jet Set Radio: awe and incentive to finish this game to the end. (I used hella cheats for it, though.) I am getting that same feeling now.

Unfortunately, this game never saw release on the PS2, and was canned.

If there is anyone out there, who could even tell me that a beta still EXISTS, I would be happy. The game was almost finished, from the looks of it; and it would break my heart even more to find out that it was lost under a pile of Angel of Darkness boxes, before being thrown in the trash by Eidos' janitor. Plus, I'd have hope and reason to save a thousand or two to, uh, buy it from you.:)

YOU HEAR THAT, LURKERS FROM EIDOS?! I WANT TO PLAY THIS GAME!

*I have not played any of Kronos Digital's fighting games, (Dark Rift 64, Criticom, etc.) but I have not heard good things. Hopefully they learned something from them, before working on this vaporware game.

I just heard about this one last week... pretty damn heartbreaking! Definitely up there on my list of coolest looking PS1 games that never made it out into the world.

To get the most out of this game, you must not use save states. I can't emphasize this enough. It is a little frustrating at first, but you will eventually see how each situation can be handled perfectly. (Not to mention how brilliant the "fear meter" is, in both concept and practice.) This is where the game shines.

As I've already admitted to earlier in this thread, I have ruined my first play-through with both the original and it's sequel. No one should make that same mistake again. :p

As opposed to playing it on PS2? I doubt there is much of a difference...

Duuude. I just bought the Japanese version of Retro Helix (Titled Fear Effect: Helix.) on Ebay! I am under the impression that it is a bitch to find, because I have never seen or heard about it until a few days ago.

If I can figure out how to upload Playstation ROMs on the internet, then I would not mind doing the honors.

The only change I've noticed between Helix and it's American counterpart is the Kanji-ridden introduction, although I'm betting there is more.

Just FYI, the first game was released only in NTSC and PAL territories. :(

The box art for the first game can be found all over the internet, but here are some pictures of Helix.

rod_wod, would it kill you to use proper punctuation in your posts? Sorry to be rude, but it looks bad and makes it difficult for people to read this thread without turning away.
