Well it looks like Germany will be like the rest of Europe because they might raise taxes on the wealthy, which believe it or not, is why the economy there has been pretty good. But with them running out of money to feed the unemployed, which is growing there apparently, something has got to give. http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE67N1RW20100824
It's more of a Germany-vs-USA comparision than Germany-vs-rest-of-Europe, but I'll just leave this here anyways: Were You Born on the Wrong Continent?"
implying America is a continent.... I read excerpts from that book. Pretty spot on in some of the comparisons. The average american is just lazy. Consumers are lazy and feel they need to have a lot, even when they don't. I kinda am like that sometimes. In general, we're a country of "have". Engorge ourselves in gluttony and consumption and yet wonder why kids have diabetes or age quicker and are dumber than people from other countries.
That's a problem most of the first world countries have, I guess. But I was shocked when I heard recently that in the US 40% of food gets thrown away. An overabundance of cheap food is one thing, but seriously guys, trashing fourty percent? What the fuck? (Don't ask me for sources/proof, it was on TV somewhere... Feel free to prove me wrong.)
I hope that's not true... but then again, I know a lot of wasteful people. Personally I always clean my plate when I eat. It starts by not taking so much to begin with.
The figure I recalled seemed to be a little high at 60%, a quick check on Google earlier turned up figures still in the 40-50% range, and I thought I'd better stick with the lower one. www.foodnavigator-usa.com (40-50%, from 2004) www.livescience.com (40%, from 2009)
