I have to say that in my experience I think American women (and Americans in general) seem to be a lot more tolerant of "geekish" hobbies - collections, gaming, comics, sci-fi etc.

In the UK there is a terrible self image thing going on and most women would be embarassed if their boy friend was to start talking about games in public or admit to being a gamer in front of her friends. It's getting better now that gaming is more mainstream, but the stigma still exists.

My girlfriend and I have big plans for the future. They centre around an arcade basement with pinball machines, a few coin-ops and a video game museum with bookcases of games that I have stored away back in the family nest. A very rare find, and a sure fire way to get a ring on her finger!

Reminded me of one of my first dates where my then gf (now wife) ably assisted me in changing the shell of my dreamcast to a snazzy green one. That DC travelled the world with us for about 4 years....It's in the loft somewhere with a burnt out laser at the mo'

She likes RPG's and puzzle games for the most part - not a real gamer as such - lately she's been inclined to playing Sudoku which, for the life of me, I cannot see the appeal. Hmmm...saying that; she is studying to be an accountant so it does make a bit of sense...Give me baseball bats, uzi's and crack in GTA over Sudoku any day of the week.

Generally speaking, she doesn't mind what I collect as long as the bills are paid. I did have some trepidation getting into arcade pcb collecting but that seems to be going well - I've got my first cab arriving this weekend :)

My wife is ok with it. There was a point when I had to sneak stuff into the house (sometimes I would get caught and hear 'is that another SNES Cris ).
Now i only buy expensive stuff now and again. I have a seperate bank account that pays for any gaming stuff, I get loads of stuff from Car boot sales etc & sell what I dont want on eBay. She liked tha fact my games sales bought us a new car :)

My only problem with her & games is she wont play them anymore, she always used to play PS1 with me back in the day but she lost interest & just plain refuses to play now.

My last real girlfriend was a fucking psycopath and despised videogames. God I hate that bitch. I don't know why I stayed with her so long. It might have something to do with pussy, I think.

The girl I had a short fling with after that was into games, then everything fell apart and she moved hundreds of miles away. Goddamn she was perfect. I am going to kill myself.*

Anyway, I think I'm just going to have to wait until they come out with sexbots or get human cloning down, so then I could just clone myself and change a chromosome around to make it a woman. I wouldn't be a very attractive woman, so some plastic surgery may be in order. At least we would have a love of games in common.

*This is a joke. Everytime I say this somebody always gets all concerned and thinks I'm really suicidal. Just so you all know, I will never kill myself.

My wife USED TO play games, and she's still into things like Diablo, which bore me to death. To describe how she feels about my hobby of playing, buying and collecting games and various other things [not cats, nor tiny sweater wearing dogs though], she's against it. In her opinion, game is a toy, and toys are for children. There's no way, aside from hypnosis, which I haven't tried, to explain what games are, when you collect them and how important are small details souch as spine cards.

"But honey, it's a real bargain, and the original package is intact. Can't we just get ..."

"Talk to the hand, buddy. We need to buy more important things. And if we don't spend it all, we'll save it for later. You never know when you need a huge amount of cash, that normal people spend on entertaining themselves."

She's weird that way. And it isn't just games. When I get a DVD [once a year that is. If I'm lucky] it better not be one of them damned 2 disc editions or any kind of special editions for that matter. To put it in simple terms, I'm supposed to feel lucky she doesn't make me download DivX movies, for which you don't pay at all, thus the cash can be kept for later ocasions, that never are something that I would want, and always are new closets or other nonsense we don't need, since the "old" stuff is still performing and looking nicely.

With time I found my ways around it, and I hardly ever get pissed off by this, like I used to. Whether it's vinyls [oh, the helish vinyls! why don't I download mp3's or at least buy a CD!? Do I HAVE to get vinyls?], DVDs, games or anything ealse, I can pretty much get away with it, since I have my space for all the game stuff, and it's tough to keep track of everything when you have so many, so I always hide it in the depths of my collection.

    Now laugh.

My first ex was a videogame addict. She made me pot brownies in exchange for taking her to get her new Xbox and have it modded. We stayed in my room for the whole of christmas vacation getting all 96 stars in Super Mario World. Everything Super-Mario related, she's into (Virtual Alan would be her type of guy, I think). She was awesome... but not very faithful - and ended up meeting a millionaire on a cruise. After that guy was history, her next boyfriend's name was "Mario".

That, I consider awesome. We were still very good friends until a short while ago.

My second Ex never did play videogames as a child, but when we started dating, she became addicted to RPGs. We played Atari and Super Nes together. She liked watching me play shooters, and was VERY interested in videogame history as told by me. We almost finished FFX together. I still haven't been able to erase her file, even knowing it'll never be played again. If she spoke any English, she'd have become a member of this forum.

She finds Super Mario frustrating, though, and really hates the series. She and my first ex know each other from college and aren't very friendly to each other.

Now... My new girlfriend. She's all kinds of awesome. We plug in the consoles but never get to playing. That's what I get for having my TV and stuff next to my sofa-bed. We've been meaning to play Burnout Revenge or just fire up the old Flashback2 for like... a week. And I'm pretty sure it ain't gonna happen tonight either.
But she is seriously into videogames. She carries an SP everywhere she goes, for example, only to be able to play Harvest Moon. She was an anime freak in her teens (has all of Sailor Moon, japanese version, on VHS tapes, for example), and still is today, so we're very geeky together. She loves retro stuff, too.

You want to find a geeky girlfriend, go to anime conventions. Don't go for the scultural-body-cosplay type, as they only (generally) want a sugar daddy to maintain their Yaoi Manga habit. But there are great girls out there, even if most of them have serious emotional issues.

My previous girlfriend didn't like gaming with the exception of rhythm games(when I would totally whoop her ass while pretending to take it easy). The fun hours we had playing Donkey Konga and more ^_^.

    the wife

When i first met the wife, i got engaged into a geeky chat about building GBA software, which was mostly a monologue ;-) . Well 6 yrs later, we are married and have kids, and fortunately have enough space for a "games room". While she does not understand how much money is spent, she respects it as being part of my life (especially the devkit / console research part makes more sense to her), so i am a happy panda. She has banned me from buying large-ass stuff, suchas cabinets, though.
