Whats good enough for general use around the house? Ive just got a wifi router (cheapo belkin) and ive gone for the best possible security i can use but its left me being disconnected from online games pretty fast even though high speed downloads seem fine. Also ive noticed abit of lag on the computer thats connected via ethernet to the modem and im not sure if its the game its self as my friend is reporting no lag what so ever. Not sure if steppimg down on the security will make it better as the router is only about 6 feet away from me and is connected at 54Mbps.
Security protocol should not be a noticeable issue with speed. For home use you're fine with WPA-TKIP. WEP is worthless. -hl718
Agreed, WEP is pointless because it only keeps out those that might stumble upon your network by chance and try to connect using standard Windows (or OSX). WPA-TKIP offers enough security for the home without being too technical. If your router doesn't support this method then look online - most manufacturers offer firmware upgrades that add this feature to older hardware. You should also ensure your operating system does, as I don't think it was added to Windows XP until Service Pack 2. Another thing I'm unsure of is whether the PSP/DS offer this method of encryption. Perhaps someone else could confirm? EDIT: Do you use wireless phones in your household? If so, you might want to try changing broadcast channels on your router. I recall there being a few probs with this kind of interference in the past. You might also want to move any wireless handsets away from the router, preferably into another room. In fact, even if you're not using a wireless phone you should try it. Are there any other wireless networks in the neighbourhood? Are there any large antennae/aerials close to your house?
If the wireless network is strictly private, then I also suggest doing MAC address filtering on the computers you know will be connected to the network.
