I have just acquired a Wii console, but the image displays artifacts/glitches. I have read that it is a problem with the GPU (Hollywood). Can this be repaired in a similar way to a PS3 by applying heat to reflow the solder balls?

How did you apply the heat to it? If you just tossed it in the oven, there a high chance that it'll be worse.

my preferred method is pouring lighter fluid all over it and then setting fire to it.

not a helpful suggestion but maybe sell it as faulty and buy a working one :)

Buy a used one, if you can. They're pretty darn cheap and you might be able to find a modded one too.

Like a PS3 reflow. Applied liquid flux and then a heat gun.

Heat gun isnt the correct way to reflow BGA chips. Regardless of what xbox/ps3 "reflowers" say.

I know its not a professional way of repairing a console, but I thought I would give it a try as I had nothing to lose.

Indeed, it also shows it was related to the issue.

As mentioned above, Wiis are silly cheap at the moment - so nothing of great value was lost.
