Has anyone tried the new Freeloader disc for the Wii? Can you recommend/condemn it? Are there any games that don't work on it?

I would hold off on buying one, the last Wii update has the facility to disable the exploit they use to make it work.

Does the update effect all games, or just some?

On a related matter, is there any way to get games from the Japanese Virtual Console to work on an American or European system?

    very nice question.

I think that the Wii's firmware is the decidi factor in what games can be downloaded in the first place.

For example, I having a US wii, yet living in Europe, only have access to the US shop. This also goes for the credit cards I can register (US only, since it asks for a billing address and apparently cross-references it), and even the damn clock/location doesnt allow you to choose non-NTSC/US areas!!

I have no problem to use my German Credit Card with my Japanese Wii.
Buying Wii Points with it went surprisingly well.

I wouldn't buy a Freeloader. The exploit can too easily be patched.

Yep, Freeloader is a waste of cash. I know that the Japanese Lego Star Wars makes you update the Wii before the game will run. This is the first game I bought for the Wii that did this and I own quite a few now. So for the time being it looks like the only way to play imports 100% on a Wii is to buy an imported machine :(

Is there a list somewhere of the games that require you to update your firmware?

When using a modded console it is best to use patched images of the imported discs (ie burned discs) in order to avoid bricking it.

It is really unfortunate that Nintendo haven't followed the PS3's and gameboy's open model of region coding (or lack thereof)

They actually help publishers and local branches to some extent. Also, they are a way to "block" retailers from getting goods overseas that do not always meet national standards (legally speaking, concerning language, content, manuals etc).

That said, the overhead of imports is unlikely to hurt domestic sales in my view

Yeah the game is dumped. However most stores get their stock in the beginning of the week. So its already in circulation. So no big surprise that the game 'already' is pirated!

This friday, at least in Europe.
