It looks as though the Wii will be in the hands of European gamers no later than Friday November 3rd, as an oversight in Electronic Arts' release schedule planning pegs a Wii game with the above street-date.

The game is Need for Speed: Carbon and although no other details were offered, this news should come as a welcome insight to those eagerly awaiting the new Nintendo home console's release across the EU.

However, EA is not alone in letting its plans slip. THQ also showed its cards a little early, pegging SpongeBob: Kreature from the Krusty Krab for the Wii in October. Of course, games often hit the streets before their host hardware comes available. Either way, the Wii now looks closer than ever.

We'll let you know as we get more.

Doesn't mean much. Most stores sold their PS2 games at least a day early from what I recall. A friend came to school practically foaming at the mouth with a Tekken Tag manual. I think a few other consoles had games released long before the console was available, but most of them due to stores breaking street date rather than corporate dictation.

But this is also interesting. If November 3rd is a possible Europe release date what about the US?

I was about to say exctly the same thing about Spong, dvdmike.

Damnit, Nintendo. I wish they would say a date, a month even. It's not like Sony is going to rush their lunch to beat them (they are going to rush things anyway heh)

the first 4 need for speed games were acceptable.hell the first was even good, it wasn't a property of EA back then. In all fairness though, Test Drive (up to TD5) was my fav. PC car racer

Is it just me or do people really hate EA? I always wondered why do they bother with the new NHL, NBA, Tiger Woods, whatever... These titles always end up the same way [in Swedish stores at least]. They get stuffed into huge bins with 1/4 of the original price and noone buys them anyway.

Madden sells. Sports games probably keep the industry going more than we'd like to admit.

That's seriously weird, because I see them all the time, for a fraction of the original price in extremly large quantities. And noone wants them. Not here at least. I could build a house of NHL's, NFL's, NBA'a, Tigers and all the others.

Sports games are generally only valuable for the first few months after launch, which is when all the people who are interested in them buy them. They depreciate faster than any other type of game, but they are replaced year after year, and get bought year after year. Second hand sports games are essentially worthless, because by the time they're traded the next one's on its way.

I don't really get it either, but I see them in the game sales charts often enough to know that there must be some serious money. After all, sports games are a large part of what made EA the giant it is today.

But you would think they would adjust the amount of copies they publish if you're left with so many, and noone will buy them. Unless it's the market chains / stores that are stuck with this crap and EA couldn't give a shit.

I'm not exactly the biggest fan of EA, but on the other hand I've been getting less pleasure from the majority of their more recent efforts. Then again, considering that it was already well into production before its developer was bought out by the company, does Burnout 3: Takedown really count as a proper EA game? I'll definitely agree that the original Need For Speed was a decent title, which - once again - was only really published by EA (or at least this was the case for the Saturn version).

The real problem most people seem to have with EA is its end-of-year sequels, as they rarely add anything of worth to previous installments. I didn't mind as much back in the early 32-bit days when FIFA made the jump to 3D, but once superior alternatives came along (ISS, Worldwide Soccer) it got a little boring paying for a couple of new pixellated billboards here and there along with some allegedly trendier licensed music. Fortunately, if you can wait a few months extra the retail cost of such products often drops quite dramatically, and I didn't really mind shelling out 50p for a second-hand copy of FIFA '98 last year - believe me, if I wasn't such a completist when it comes to my Saturn collection it would still be on the shelf. As for coughing up the initial RRP every year, that's another thing entirely and I'm sure EA will do just fine even without my investment... whether I'd like them to or not!

P.S. Have you seen the preview images from Need For Speed: Carbon on the DS? I'm sure you'll all agree that "nasty" isn't a strong enough word to begin describing this monstrosity. Do they even bother putting in the effort? If not, why should consumers? Most will regardless, but who am I to criticise? (Stupid mugs - hope they also enjoy the inevitable FIFA Street 3 and Burnout 5 or whatever they decide to call it...)

Ack! What a world! Me stepping in to defend EA...

Ok, don't get me wrong, I think the yearly updates for every sports franchise is stupid, but taken in moderation, EA's sports game are quite fun.

...That is to say...I like having at least one American football game, golf game, and a baseball game for each system I own. EA's sports games are fun, (and really damn cheap when you don't care about having up to date rosters) so I usually have one for most systems.

Long story short: I'm no advocate of releasing an update every year, but you're selling yourself short if you don't give at least one Madden or a Tiger Woods a try. I play them both on my DS a ton.

Asnozz, make really good friends with someone who owns a console store, then you'll be able to snag one before you leave in theory.
