My Wii won't read discs although they spin and I cleaned and readjusted the POT on the laser. Although the laser still emits a red beam can it still be dead?
the fact that it still emits a red light is good ............ have you used a DMM when adjusting the POT value ? i have copy and pasted from another site some values also does the laser move up and down the rails when trying to read a disc ?
I used a multimeter and set it to 3.7. Thanks to your suggestion I realized I put the sliding bar on wrong causing the laser not to move. However, when I put it back together the discs no longer spin (they were before). I can't think of any other reason besides the motor crapping out. Could it be something else?
i have had a WII where the disc wouldnt spin so i bought a replacement Spindle Motor and now it works great............. one thing with mine was the original motor was sorta stiff not loose so if it has died it will feel stiff its possible that your ohms value is too low , checkout the below what i pulled off a site today ive actually been working on 3 faulty WII's myself today 1 is identical to your intial problem in this thread...............
as ive discovered today the WII drive is a bastard to work with theres multiple things that can go wrong with it.................... a simple replace the laser fix sometimes isnt the fix research via googling or asking questions in forums helps the situation
If it was me I'd either replace the OP or just swap the entire drive for $20... Sometimes its better to do it that way.. Drive: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DVD-Driv...o_Game_Accessories&hash=item2ec021c761&_uhb=1 OP: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Laser-Le...H_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item54022b07e2&_uhb=1
A very common fault with Wii drives is the "golden ribbon" on the optical pickup becomes flaky and starts to malfunction when the pickup moves to certain positions on the sled. As the "golden ribbon" is part of the optical pickup, the only remedy is replacing it. Moral to the story: Having "red glow" on your lens actually MEANS NOTHING as a method of diagnosis...
THIS. The amount of work to dive that deep, change the laser! Here you go, posted a Guide: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=30455&p=621948#p621948
I found out today that the discs weren't spinning because the screws were too lose on top of the drive so the metal piece in the middle wasn't pushing down enough (had the noise issue previously from the screws being too tight). It still won't read so I'm going to order the new laser and see how it goes.
