Seems there are rumors going around [EGM] about sony releasing a Wii like mote for the PS2 to challenge nintendo on the low budget/family market.

    http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/06/opinion-if-sony.html

quite late but it would be a good idea to blow some extra life in the PS2 and keep the PS3 prices up.

Anybody think this is really going to happen? and doesn't nintendo have some kind of copyright on it that might keep sony from releasing such a thing? anyway I wouldn't be amazed if they did release something like this!

I can't see this happening at all frankly. Developers will be moving away from the PS2 now and I can't see enough people buying such a peripheral for the PS2 without games to attract devs to make games for it. It's a catch 22.

Actualy it's a somewhat smart move if it works out. The Ps2 will still see alot of software support for the next 1-2 years. A large selection of thoes games will be budget casual & kids games.

A parent will see a ps2 with this for only $100 then see the wii at 2.5 times the price and be more incline to buy their kids a ps2.

Just buying the new controller for your old PS2 as an upgrade would be great and would open a closing market again, hence stimulating developers to keep this console alive for another year or 2, at the same time because this is a last gen console many low buget developers can join in too as it's probably a lot cheaper to develop for by now! and who knows we might see some daring/original titles coming out!

If anything, this will probably just open a few quick doors for Sony to license some last minute Wii ports to keep the PS2 competitive until its successor comes down in price (along with HD technology in general, which is still far too highly priced for most consumers) and maybe even a few graphically downscaled PS3 games - or at least ones that utilise the Sixaxis' motion sensor in a good enough way, if such titles even exist!

Has there ever been a console add-on that has sold well? I thought they generally bombed, hence why Nintendo decided to forego releasing the remote as a GCN accessory.

well the GC was a bad seller. It's unfair to say that the PS2 would fall in the same bush if they released a Wiimote like controller.

That said, if it aint bundled, it's not making a bang as if it were.

I think Sony squashed the rumour. in any case the Wii is selling to a casual audience - it's the whole image that's appealing. I'm not one to enthuse this way, because frankly, it's a little embarassing - but my inlaws who don't play video games.. ever, where murdering wiisports at my home the other day. it was quite bizzare. nintendo scare me sometimes.

But still singing star en guitar star and such are still selling well, and back in the day that cam thing did well too and all not bundled with the system.
so another gimmick would I think not do that bad on a system now used by a younger and much older audiance then the ps2 originally did due to the low price, family orientated software and the original owners giving them away to small bother/sister/cousins and what not to play their singingstar kinda games.
so this would probably not only sell a couple of more ps2's to people that didnt have one or were doubting the wii because 250 euro may be cheap compared to a ps3 but it's still quite some money for the avarage joe with a family and a low paying job but would also boost the software sells along with it.
The thing is it doesn't need to make a bang, any extra year(s)/months/weeks the ps2 sells more hardware or software is already free money by this stage of life and welcome.

let's not forget PS3 compatibility - if it's a blutooth-based controller, it would be a good extension for future PS3 titles as well.

In all honesty though, I think the new EyeToy will be the closest thing to wii-like motion recognition on Sony's consoles.

The ps2 is selling just fine at the moment, so it would be a 50/50 risk to make such a move , because it would further emphasize the success of this new direction led by Nintendo.
