So did anyone here actually play the Wii at the show? I'm very curious if the old games (8-bit thru 16-bit mainly) will support their native resolutions. Nintendo has constantly said they won't support HD b/c nobody uses it. Yet, they also don't seem to want to support old school fans by making current systems with 15khz support. That puts them right in the middle --- where nobody should be IMHO. So, for their fans that still have CRT TVs (which according to them is 90%) will they be forced to play their games through all sorts of nasty filters and shit?
http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20060511/wii18.htm From this shot it would look like there are no borders. They will probably bung in various options like the GC GB player - zoom, maybe a widescreen option etc. I really hope they give us the full range of visual options (like gunstar super heroes) otherwise you are probably better off with the original console.
well i have an insider membership and watched the video for it yesterday on ign, baisicly the game has boarders so it can run in its original resoloition, then for some of them if you move the rigtt anlough in a direction the screen will stetch out, then back to normal when hit again. The video they tired out mario 64 and sonic, i must say they looked exactly like they did on their orignal systems, just much cleaner picture from what i can tell.
nintendo said that the virtual console comes with full EDTV support (progressive scan), thus no HD, just ED.
Bad news for VC users, as no 8-bit or 16-bit game runs natively in progressive scan. It would need some type of 15-khz non-interlaced option, or, not as good, but better than nothing, a fake scanlines option, like you find in just about every other (ahem, free) emulator out there. As mentioned by Warakia, some developers (Sega) are realizing what people want, and putting multiple options in there games. The Gunstar Treasure Box has about every mode you could want. Bad news indeed.
