Hi again friends. I have a quick question that I have been pondering for a few days now. Will Leds mess with a game consoles laser? I was thinking of putting some leds on the inside of my playstations lid to illuminate the disc area (plexi deisgn cut out of the top) but Im wondering if I put about 8-10 blue leds in there if it could cause problems for the laser of the PS. Im thinking it will be just fine but I want to double check first before I start burning holes in there. (alot of people use drills but heating up a coat hanger with a tourch and slowly going through the plastic will produce just as good of resluts). Anyway im wondering this because I did it to a DC of mine and I tested the laser before I put it back togather and it was fine but after it was all back togather its starting to not read discs. Thanks to anyone who can help me out. I really do appricate it. -MiKe
Shouldn't think there will be any problems. I did a Dreamcast mod with about 20 odd green LEDs inside with out a problem. Yakumo
Thanks for the reply. I was just worried since they will be in with the laser in where the disc goes. Im not sure if you mean you did yours that way or if yours were just inside one of the clear cases. I dont think it will bother it either but I had just been thinking about it and wanted to double check. Thanks again!
Should be ok but try avoiding red LED's. Best if you connect up to the lid sensor so they only turn on when the lid is open though.
Well you see thats the problem. Im putting plexiglass in the top of the lid so you can see the disc spinning and I thought it would be cool to have 8-10 leds in there that would bounce light off the spinning disc and such whilest playing the games. All leds I use would be blue in color and most likely 3mm (5mm at most)
Overall it should be fine, but there are a few things i would worry about. You really don't want to shine light into the laser especally on a PS2. PS2's have this nasty habbit of upping the voltage to the laser if it's having trouble reading. If your LED's were bright enough, it could shine straight through the disc and begin to interfere with the laser. I would just make sure you're not pointing a led into the laser and you'll be fine there. The other thing you have to worry about is space, there isn't a whole lot of extra room inside one of those DVD drives for the leds and wiring, you don't want the wires rubbing on the disc. Otherwise you should be ok, and let's see pics when you're done! EDIT: you might want to look at etching a board and using surface mount leds instead to save yourself some space.
Thanks for the reply ace. I think you misunderstand me though. Im doing this to a PS1 not a PS2. I have already done somthing similer to my extra DC. If you would like pics of it I will take some. Its painted purple metal flake with the controller port plastic, buttons, and triangle on the lid being metal flake silver. It looks awsome and has 8 blue leds around the lid that are always no and then there are 2 in the fan houseing 1 on each side. It really looks sweet. I just got a modchip working in my extra playstation so now it must be pimped to be on my wall of fame (my entertainment center). Anyway thanks for the replys theres guys. -Mike
