...am i the only person in the gaming world that HATES unlocking things in games? That's not replay value to me that's "WASTING TIME I COULD BE DOING PLAYING THE MULTIPLAYER"
It depends on the game and structure. In general, making progress should be encouraged and this is easily done by somehow rewarding the player for their efforts. (Progress being used as a universal term for anything that in ultimately leads to something.) Sometimes content is also withheld to avoid spoilers (be it levels/weapons/characters or more obscure stuff like Rogue Squadron's Naboo fighter), or it's just simply withheld as it just isn't intended for use in the initial presentation because of the way it somehow alters the experience (alternate weapons, new characters, cheat modes, etc.). If the tasks required to unlock something don't entertain you or the content that is unlocked "isn't worth it", chances are the game you're playing either sucks or you're playing on the wrong field... That's the way I see it. Oh! Almost forgot, you might want to stay away from the PVP stuff in MMOs.
My pet hate is paying a couple of quid for a costume/map/etc and it turns out to be a 100k file that just unlocks the data off the DVD. If it's on the DVD and I paid for it, I should get it included when I bought the game.
Fighting games. I can not stand unlocking characters. Or fighting games with different levels that aren't just backgrounds (like Smash Brothers). I can NOT stand unlocking them in those. IMO if it's multiplayer, everything should be unlocked from the start. Go ahead and give me extras or more campaign stuff to unlock, but multiplayer should be ready from the get go.
ohhh I know Jon. That's why I didn't get into the other COD4:MW. I dunno though, I DID enjoy unlocking stuff in Rainbow Six Vegas 2. Then again, the most accurate assault rifle is unlocked from the start so maybe that's why I didn't mind it.
yeah, in Rainbow you gotta unlock weapons but it didn't really take that long. And the last thing you unlock is like the riot shield which isn't really practical for the game, just fun to use or whatever. In MW2 you have to unlock every weapon, attachment, perk, pro perk, kill streaks, death streaks, and different colors. I've put 16 hours into the multiplayer and I've unlocked 48% of the stuff.
