http://www.ebay.ca/itm/New-PATA-IDE...t=US_Drive_Cables_dapters&hash=item2c6f707c84 Anyone use this one, looks nice and compact. I've got a ton of SATA drives lying around and a couple of Xboxes to mod for people.
I've ordered a few different cheapo adapters like that off eBay and they've worked in Xbox, PS2, and PVRs when I've tested them. I can't guarantee that one will work, but my guess is that it most likely should (don't get mad at me if I'm wrong, lol). Best way would be to order one, try it out, if it works then order more. I will PM you eBay links of the most recent ones I've ordered.
I've found it to be a crap shoot but Marvell bridge chips seem to have good compatibility ratings. Also, just because you can use a Slayer's X disc and FTP the dash over doesn't mean it'll work. I have an adapter from an AT&T U-Verse DVR (they used 160gb IDE drives in some models) that didn't work properly because it took too long for everything to be ready at boot and the XBox would throw an error.
I personally use this one now and it works perfectly. Fits in with no modifications. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002Y2NI4M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This adapter does require an 80 pin connector (I used this one): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000I21Y28/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 To get the cable to fit/work I had to move the center connector to the opposite end. Its simple to modify, just remove the connector and crimp it down (I used my workshop vice...)
I've used several of these in the past , the first thing I noticed on some of those it takes a bit longer to detect the drive and flubber animation will pause a second or so on bootup, the other thing I noticed is that the adapters are slower than normal IDE drives, just bare that in mind. PS Almost forgot, all of the ones Ive tested, fail to lock or unlock a Sata drive, so you will need either a Hardmod, or to Flash your TSOP, not a train smash tho.
Hahaha same here, however some just get super nervous looking at the board anyhow. I have a super slow hard disk Quantum Fireball in one of them, and sometimes get issues so also choose a low power drive for these adapters.
A lot of people are using WD green drives in their systems. What about the blue drives ? They cost almost the same and I can say from my expierience that the blue ones are better. And Seagate is out of the question, except if it's an old IDE drive.
No experience with the blue, since I'm using a 3tb green. But I can say it takes about 20-30 seconds for bootup into xbmc.
I was considering going the sata to pata route at one point but ended up just putting in a 750gb pata drive and not have to worry about incompatible adapters.
Blue is a bog standard hard drive, really. It is 7,200 rpm, whereas Green is variable speed up to I think 5,400 rpm. So yeah, you might get faster access times - but perhaps the Green is designed to last longer? One advantage Blue has is that it's still available in IDE. All Greens have 64 Mb cache, whereas Blues are up to 64 Mb. And the Blues are only available in a maximum size of 1 Tb. Greens go up to 6 Tb. What is the maximum capacity you can use in an Xbox, though? You could also use Blacks. Reds are meant for RAID and Purples for surveillance systems, so steer clear of them. http://www.wdc.com/en/products/internal/desktop/
If using a sata to pata, Id go with a 5400 rpm drive. Sata drives that take longer to spin up may not be detected in time by the xbox.
I didn't have any issues personally when I tried it out... could be a combination of what adapter + hard drive you're using. But generally it's best to avoid the use of any adapters (just one added variable that could cause problems), but sometimes that just isn't an option. Like if you have lots of large Sata drives laying around.
