As most of you probably already know this game was only released in the US on Sega Channel, which required the user to redownload the game every time the console was powered off; meaning that all copies of the game were lost when the service was shutdown. However, the US version was finally (re)released on the AT Games Ultimate Portable Game Player. I was wondering if it would be possible to dump this rom from the handheld, as I have not been able to find any information on it being done.
well apparently there's no dump of this one rom yet...in the mean time you can always try to force the rom to boot on NTSC
There are Game Genie codes that bypass the region protection and you can inject those codes into the ROM itself. I've made a reproduction cartridge of it but I don't have the patience to get good enough at the game to see if saving works.
Nice to hear it's possible to get the US version working at least. Sure do miss those Sega channel days..
I remember asking around to see if anyone wanted to get that Sega clone and rip Wily Wars out of it, but no one seems interested. I think people are taking it for granted that it'd be the PAL version with a NTSC hack. It's rather unfortunate. I would assume if it was the Sega Channel build, it have at least a few token changes compared to what a retail cart would have.
Wikipedia says that the game was released in Japan, Brazil and PAL territories. Here in Brazil we use the NTSC format. I wonder if there is a dump for the Brazilian cart.
Huh, come to think of it, I'm not sure there is. Particularly interesting since I recall a few other games that were taken as Sega Channel exclusives also ended up as Brazilian carts...
The game was not PAL optimized in any way. By using the region patch the game runs just like on the Sega Channel. The only possible difference might be slightly different copyright information on the title screen. Awhile back I released a patch that transforms the PAL version to a North American version with typical SRAM saving rather than serial eeprom. Check romhacking.net
I tried writing out a patched version of the game to an EPROM and using Evander Holyfield's Real Deal Boxing as a donor since it had EEPROM - at least I thought it did. Your patch does work quite well though.
As far as I know, Greatest Heavyweights is the only 4MB game that uses the same EEPROM saving. I believe Evander Holyfield is missing the last address line which needs to be manually wired to the cart edge connector.
