I recently got a sony vaio that only has drivers for windows ME. Would these ME drivers work on windows 98 SE? I hear that they are similar but I'm not sure if they are the same...

Iirc, 9x and ME use the same driver model, but the driver's .inf files may check for different OS version or whatever. So in theory all drivers should work, but in practice some inf editing might be necessary to get them to install in the first place.

Basically what rso said. High chances it'll work fine.

I personally preferred ME over 98 anyways, but I'm well aware that I'm part of the minority that thinks ME was actually better than 98 (not significantly though by any means). :p

me's not all bad, but some features (eg system snapshots) are implemented very badly.

if you wanna get serious about your 9x experience, there's ways to run 98se with the 95fe shell (no ie integration) and choice components from me, combining the best of all worlds. somewhere on msfn.org iirc, some 9x specific subforum (too lazy to look for a direct link right now, sorry). while you're there also grab "kernelex" to be able to run (most) modern software on 9x.

KernelEX is very useful. I experimented with it once on a late 90s SFF Dell Optiplex running Windows 98 (FE), a 266 MHz P2 (upgraded to a 450 MHz Katmai P3), 64 MB RAM, and 2 MB VRAM.

Aside from HD Video playback, it performed solidly and did almost everything that 95% of the people that "need" to upgrade to the newest iPhone every year do on the internet.
