    Windows sucks.

My Windows folder is effing 19GB and filled to the brim with useless shit. Effing WinSxS ...10GB just for that shit. Couldn't they figure out a more resourceful way to solve this DLL problem in Redmond? Bah, eff this shit.

If only I could run all the programs I need daily natively on Linux... if only the industry wouldn't neglect Linux so much.

I could go on more on the shortcomings of Windows, but for now I'm off banging my head repeatedly on a wall :banghead:

true but the reason Windows wins is that its easy to use, Linux is very good etc but absolutely 100% useless for someone who is not very IT literate (about 90% of PC Users), most Linux distro's are far too complicated for the average person to use

Linux is 100% useless to me (as a desktop OS) and I have been working in IT for over 10 years.

But I will admit, this is only because what I need to run wont run on Linux. Chicken and Egg I guess.

But dont pretend Linux is miracle cure for everything - it has plenty of its own problems.

I can't agree with you Mystical... Ubuntu and Linux Mint are excellent distros and as easy to use as Windows.
The problem is most people use a Windows computer first in their life, so they learn Windows and then moving to a different OS seems hard... (but it isn't... some people are lazy... other people don't have the time...)
If you show Linux Mint (or Ubuntu) to a kid who's never used a computer before, he'll learn it as easy as Windows (the same goes for many other distros, but these 2 are the most user friendly).

Anyway, for my non-gaming needs, I can run most Win apps under Linux using either Wine or Crossover. I know there are many cases where it's not the same, or the app won't work at all, but you can always go with a VM... unless you need all the processing and video power... in which case a dual-boot may be a good solution.

Don't get me wrong, I like Windows and use it on a daily basis... Both Windows and Linux have things I love and things I hate... But I still can't seem to understand why Windows Vista/7 take so much space just for the OS. From 1.5GB for WinXP, they went to a huge 7 to 14 GB. WTF Microsoft?!?!?!

On small and pricey SSD's, 20GB is a lot...

I always used a dedicated partition for my OS, in 1996 that partition was 1GB, in 2000 it was 10GB, now it is 30GB and nearly full, something is wrong with that.

    Not really...

in 1996 price per GB was like $220
    in 2000 it was $20-30
and before the madness in Thailand it was less than $0.5 in 2011

Even going by SSD prices, you are better off now than you were in 96 or 2000. So not really seeing your point.

But feel free to rant, regardless of facts :)

I have tried Ubuntu and yes it was fairly straightforward but still found it harder to use than Windows, I have been an IT Technican for over 10 years and i have never once had a user request anything to do with Linux, (my current position has 3000+ students and about 750+ staff and not one of them uses linux and about 3% use Macs) even the geeky friends i have cant be arsed with it anymore (they used to but just say its a pain now using VM, Wine etc. to run stuff), the recent upsurge at work is people wanting iPads, Tablets ec. rather than computers as they dont even want the complications of Windows anymore (do you think these sort of people will want linux? seriously doubt it)

The only other new trend i have seen is people buying MACS but NOT using the MAC OS (using bootcamp to install Windows) and just Dual Booting to Windows as they want the look of the MAC hardware but not have to use the OS.

People want simplicity and im afraid its not Linux, Windows or the Mac OS, they basically want something similar to the Android OS etc.

This is from my and my work mates experience so im not saying this is what everyone in the world wants but we have alot of staff and students here to see a good data sample and we work with alot of other Universities and outside systems and they have found similar results (we're geeks so we do talk about these things)

remember theirs a shit load more stuff in the later versions which should be taken into account, don't get me wrong i agree with what your saying but Windows 7 has a few more features than Windows 95

This is like saying "back in 2000 my processor was only 600mhz and Windows ran fine!!!, now I need 2GHZ, THIS IS MADNESS"

Tech progresses and gets better, software takes advantage of the new speed/space.

I know how you feel but there isn't a single OS without shortcomings. That's why I hop between anything and everything that gets the job done as quickly as possible. And until the software landscape changes, that will mostly be Windows. :/

I have a 32 GB Kingston SSD with Linux on it. Only booted into several times, then I stopped using it. I forgot I even had it!

However, I do agree that Linux is better than Windows. It does also have its issues here and there.

What the hell are you doing? My Windows 7 Ultimate folder is 11.8gb and hasn't been reformatted for a good 4 or 5 months so is pretty bloated (I normally do it every 3 months or so.)

OSX is retard proof, like a luxury OS with training wheels and a bib! I love it, and it's great for porn.

I wonder what you guys are doing, I use the SAME windows XP install since 2008 and it's Windows folder is 6.15GB

And yes I run this thing without reinstall since 2008. Had a few incidents that forced me to use the CD to boot the recovery console but nothing serious enough to force me to reinstall everything.

30GB of OS files ? That IS MADNESS :-0

Base install of Lion is around 7GB FYI.

Also, whoever said Mac OSX is rock solid just hasn't tried to do much with it. I am apple trained (click here for proof) and broke it numerous times during my training courses. The tutor also kept pointing out things that didnt work and was met with "they will fix that in the next release".

The server version is much worse however.

The whole fanboy view really annoys me at times :(

Loved 2k. The only reason I switched to XP in 2007-2008 was because I went quad core and 2k Pro only supports 2 cores.

Do like what they did in Windows 7 though.
