    Did it work before?

These are a little notorious for breaking cables right at the controller, but usually you have intermittant connection before nothing. You can shorten the cable as shown, just be aware there's little headroom inside so keep things shallow.
it's ugly but it gets you there.jpg

EDIT - memory of this repair is coming back. Two tips. First I freed the ferrite while I was at it, because I blame it for the stress that causes the break. I just let it slide down the cable out of the way. Second note the big brown insulated washer -- that's to hold the guts in place while you work.

so did you unwrap the wire and fix the broken connection? what is the ferrite?

i cant really see what you did behind the tape

edit: i never used it before today, somehow it ended up at my house in a drawer, but i could never find the breakaway dongle, i did today and when i tried it out it wouldn't power on

Right... Well I guess it could be dead for any number of reasons then, and working on the cable first would be the proverbial wrong tree.

IF it was in my hands I'd first check the cable for obvious damage by eye and finger-feel. Then I'd see if it worked at all if I fiddled the cable at the controller end, where they often have a break. (The ferrite bead is in the lump at that end. It's a simple cylinder, and stops the cable from acting as a wireless antenna when current goes through it. Wiki will have more.) After that I'd open the pad and check the cable with a multimeter, to be very sure it works.

And if all that's good, then I'd chuck it back in the drawer to become parts for other projects. Working pads are too easy to come by to fiddle farther.

Oh, and under the tape is nothing but connected wires. I cut the bad portion of the cable off, and threaded through the relief unit of the controller there, and then soldered the cable ends to their mates in the little connector. Tape plus crazy glue is used to insulate the soldered bits from each other, that's all. Threading through that relief unit took a bit of work IIRC. Used hot water to expand it, plus stern words.

hopefully this doesn't count as a double post, as nobody will know i edited the previous message from yesterday

i opened it up and the wires going into the back of the board seemed fine, i'll edit with pictures later

i plugged it in to the xbox while open and i can feel heat generating from the tiny "Microsoft" chip to the bottom right of where the wires connect to the board connector. there was no signs of damage to the board, though there was some dried gunk on the underside of the left thumbstick shell lip, but again nothing on the board, doesn't smell like burned circuit board or anything either

so if there's heat from the tiny chip, then the wires are good?
