My local PC Store (PC World) are doing the following deal

LINKSYS WRT54GSUK WIRELESS-G BROADBAND ROUTER WITH SPEEDBOOSTER

    &

LINKSYS - WIRELESS USB 2.0 ADAPTER WITH SPEEDBOOSTER

    £52.49

    Worth it?

Want to get an Ethernet Bridge as well for gaming but may have to save up.

With some configuring this would work with Nintendo WI-FI as well?

Should work with nintendo Wi Fi but its a bloody picky system. Thats certainly not a bad price, But i have no experience with linksys so I don't know how good they are (all I know is how bloody ugly their devices are!)

I have a netgear router and a Motorola Access Point - They work quite nicely together even if it isn't the most elegant solution in the world..

Linsys is crap, but then again I have a preference for netgear.

Just be aware that wireless speed is going to suck compared to wired.

If all you are doing is sharing a internet connection then you won't have problems though - unless your connection is about 20mbit....

File transfers are pretty bad over wireless though, just plug them into eachother when you want to transfer anything over 100mb

I've noticed that we get more Linksys hardware come in to the RMA department of where I work at, than I have with netgear. However, Linksys's customer support is better than Netgear, they replace a lot of our stuff with no questions asked, except for with what's wrong with it..

I have a linksys wireless router for a year now, and it hasn't given me any problems. All routers get hot, so make sure you have it in an open area, well ventilated especially since its wireless. You want as much range as possible, so put as high as you can.

Wireless is better than nothing, and that's about it.

Apart from Nintendo WI-FI and perhaps getting the ethernet bridge for Live....mainly just web surfing etc.

Chances are it will still be wired to the PC just for the WI-FI & Live.....

So do you reckon worth getting the Nintendo Dongle and just running a cable around when connecting to Live?

Thing is mainly play in my office where it all is....on 15in LCD TV/Monitor...but is sometimes nice to play on a decent 36in screen

Just make sure your antennas are up above most other electronics.

Yes, I have the exact same Router and USB hub (and suck horribly for online games like counter-strike). I'm getting 25% speed right now, but the internet is still fast (Better than the ol' Dial-up). Other than that, there shouldn't be any problems playing your DS games online.

    cables when required.................

I like Wi-fi, file transfer is half the speed of 100Mbit wired, but apart from that it's very reliable. I got wi-fi purely because I'm lazy and didn't want to put Ethernet cables through the house. For that, it's great!

Up to 1/4 really, because of full duplex. Plus its close to impossible to sustain maximum speed on any wireless network

never done something like this, so im nervous as hell

    cheers

The USB ones are poo (IMHO), my laptop just had a wireless card built in it so, I made use of it. I don't go online with the PS2 often or anything like that. When I do though (updates or FFXI, I go wired).

The transfer is about 1/4 you're right steadster dude but seeing as I never access stuff on my father's laptop, the wi-fi is purely for the internet. We only have 1mbit broadband (max available) because we're so far out in the sticks!

Dickibow's final thought of the day......
For a convenient shared internet connection (between laptops) I personally think wireless is fine but if you do generally use the full bandwidth (accessing/transferring data etc), wired is the way to go. It's more secure too.

** If you go wireless, for god sake encrypt it with WPA and change the pass key weekly**

Oh and Linksys stuff does suck! I got an Ozenda router. So easy to set-up and no shitty software to install whatsoever! Windows does it all.

Basically the same As I've been feeling - wireless is bloody great if all you want to do is share an internet connection, It's always slower than the wireless - anything bandwidth intensive on your internal network though, just shove some cat5 between the 2 and be done with it.

On a sidenote, I love these people who buy the 108mbit wireless gear "because It'll make the internet go faster"

I have a Wi-Fi set up, and I love it. Though, if you do go Linksys (it's not as bad as the other members are making it out to be. In fact, it's probably the best way to go), you may want to look into getting the 7dBi High Gain Antenna Kit.

Anyway, I bought the official XBOX Wi-Fi adapter, and I haven't had any problems with it as far as XBOX Live is concerned.
