I've seen pictures of it, and read about Wondermega having a MIDI out port. What's the purpose of this, and how does it work? Does it register MIDI data from the YM soundchip? It just sounds REALLY weird to me. I'd love to get some answers,

    thanks in advance :)

I thought it was used to sample the GYM audio to midi. I've never hooked mine up though so I could be wrong. If I find time later on I'll have a look through the instruction book and see what that says.

Wow, great for remixing purposes! Did all Wondermega consoles come with a MIDI out port? Does anybody know if there are more game systems with a MIDI out port (or even in:))?

Only the first model of the Victor (JVC) wondermega and the Sega made Wondermega come with the Midi port.

Does anyone know of a list of which games supported this feature?

I got the impression that the YM2612/TI 76489 chips sent MIDI data, no matter what game you played...

If that's true then there could be some very good midi versions of a few Mega Drive tunes coming up.

I wish it were true, but I doubt the chips are hardwired to the midi port. You'd have to write code to specifically address the port, just like with the modem ext port.

Someone should open up the Wondermega and see what the MIDI connects to. I'd like to know what software uses it, and if it's bidirectional or just game output. If that's the case it wouldn't be on the system bus but translated from the regular soundchips somehow. I personaly dont' think it's an "expansion" device, because isn't all of the reserved memory on the MD for the 32X? Sega wouldn't make stuff conflicting

Is there noone around with a Wondermega and some kind of midi device (or a midi in/usb midi interface for your computer) that could do a bit of experimenting?

EDIT: I've been doing some googleing, and it seems that the MIDI port is for composing your own music with a special cartridge, containing some kind of sequencer.

BTW. It seems like Wondermega isn't the only system with MIDI capabilities. I just read that 3DO has one or more MIDI ports.

I'd say a lot of MSXs with built-in MSX-MUSIC (the MIDI dealy) would have had MIDI ports. A lot of other computers do too - Atari ST, ZX Spectrum +2 and +3, probably the Amiga, Acorn Archimedes, pretty much any PC with some sort of MIDI (the 15-pin analogue joystick port is also MIDI in/out)...

Does anyone know if the Mondermega MIDI sequencer came on a cart or CD? Was it ever released? I can't find more than a passing mention of it on the net....

NFGman (I think) mentioned a cart, and that it was very rare. Can't confirm if it's true or not though.
