So I did a little research and discovered that the Wondermega (my RG-M1 model, and apparently the RG-M2 model as well) does not have built-in RGB output capability like the other Mega Drive consoles do. There are instructions on how to RGB mod it on this page: http://www.gamesx.com/grafx/wondermega.jpg I was just wondering if anyone on here has done this. If so, how hard is it to do? I can solder, but I'm not an expert at it. What is the likelihood that I'll mess something up? I read somewhere that the preferred method is to route the RGB lead to Modem port in the back (marked EXT.); when you do that, what kind of adapter is ideal for the female RGB port coming out of the console? Also - and anyone can answer this question - will RGB modding my Wondermega decrease or increase its value? On the one hand, you're altering the original hardware configuration which makes it different than what the manufacturer intended. On the other hand, it adds functionality that most devoted gamers would appreciate - unless they don't have a display that accepts RGB, of course. I really don't know. I wasn't sure to put this here or in the development forum, so please move it if necessary.
Definitely decrease value as a it is a very sought after piece of hardware, unlike neo geo and pc engine that while rare in certain areas isn't that hard to find if you look around.
Yup decrease, not sure why you would want to do that.. if you want to game with RGB quality just buy some messed up cheap megadrive/mega cd and go nuts on those instead of messing with a gem. Devoted gamers will have a cheaper setup for gaming, and collectors will just puke when seeing your mod.
As long as you didn't Dremel the outer shell or something I can't see it hurting the value drastically, but then I have different priorities to most.
It's easy to RGB mod the Wondermega MK 1, open it up and remove the tiny piece of metal that would have held the Mega Modem in place (it just slides out) and you have a nice hole to put a cable through. Soldering the wires to the Sony encoder chip is a bit more tricky but unless you are hamfisted, you should be able to mod and unmod the WM without anyone being the wiser. Also do not use the Phono connects at the back, use the headphone jack for sound as it's much cleaner.
If there is a way like mentioned above to mod it without leaving any traces/making holes and what not then you could. But I still feel some consoles should just not be played on, but thats the collection inside me talking.. I usually would buy a second messed up console of the same type to do my gaming on.
It's very strange this RGB modification for the Wondermega. In my HWM I don't have the sony CX/1145M chip !! I've: the sony CX02554M that is an audio converter the CXA1372Q that is a signal amplifier for the CD the cxd2500A0, a CD digital signal processor.
If you can do it discretely then do it. I take a different stance to port187 in that consoles are made to be played on and if you're going to get a lot of enjoyment out of this WonderMega then it's totally worth it. On the other hand you could just buy a second hand MD/MCD combo which does have RGB output.
The cable come from mcd board: And the two big chip on the board with informations that I found Correct my description if I've fail.
Probably you may have found already but in case anyone need to know it the ic with tthe 2 cables passing over it on the low right side just after that circled pins on the board that have the cxd 2500. Look ate it carefully and you will see cxa1145 on it.
Bit of a zombie thread... Anyway, I might actually consider doing this now, due to the fact that I don't plan on ever selling it, and also the fact that it could be done in such a way as it would be impossible to tell without opening the machine. However, I don't think I trust my own abilities well enough to do it myself, and I don't think I'd want to send it to someone else. I wouldn't trust them not to just keep the system and tell me to fuck off. A cheaper system, sure; but this thing is worth a good sum to collectors, and to me personally.
I'd do it but probably only if I knew how to myself, and had some in-game reason for wanting to shell out for a Wondermega over cheaper systems (or got a killer miracle deal on one). Already RGB ready models are dirt cheap to where I could live without the CD drive.
I reply to the thread because four years after I've solve problem. I'd don't check very well my WM. Sure it's an CXA1145M in each WM. It's the RGB encoder to transfor in analog composite. Only need take the R, G, B, Synch, +5, Gnd pins on this chip and done. I've an explicit picture near end of my dedicated page: http://www.meulij.com/wonderchips.html This is from my Victor modem, but the sega one is identical. Jacques ps: very very sorry for my english, totoro don't have learn me this language :-(
