I know a lot of you don't like Kotaku, Polygon, etc. Which one takes the cake at being downright awful? Also, what do they do that makes them stand out as particularly bad? I'm going to go with IGN as my vote. They just strike me as dude-bro gamers with no taste for originality. Their site seems to be just an ad for Activision anymore. Thoughts? Also, if this has been made recently we can delete it, but I don't think I've seen anything on this.
Gematsu, Destructoid, Siliconera. Either the community sucks or the moderators are censorship SJW nazis. I read some TV show reviews on IGN.
IGN wasn't so bad back in the 90s. Hmmm, I would have to say all modern gaming news outlets are equally bad. There's usually too much hype or hate being spread around. Finding a decent article or review to read is a challenge.
I gotta vote Kotaku. SJW echo chamber. The type of people who like to badger everyone else to change for them rather than making their own things and being the change they wish to see. IGN kinda sucks too but at least I don't feel as though I'm being reprimanded when I go there.
^ Same here. I dislike Kotaku for being a wimp about these issues, too. Anita Sarkeesian only gets press time on Kotaku for being harrassed, which is fair, but hardly anyone ever wrote about her questionable ways of constructing arguments. Also my biggest annoyance about Kotaku is that they're a bunch of newcomer hipsters who immediately ejaculate at the sight of an 8-bit Mario. Just check out some of their writers... seems like random guys who thought catering to such superficial gaming hipsters and political correctness fanatics allows them easy entry into the journalism industry, and it kind of seems to work. Screw them. Polygon again is a site that I occasionally enjoy. Not as preachy as Kotaku and more focused on the making of games than on hipster merch and gender wars (let's hope they don't completely merge their articles).
Kotaku and Polygon. Destructoid got really meh after some people left. I used to enjoy Joystiq, but that is gone. These days i check GameTrailers, Eurogamer, Sixth Axis, Push Square and Gamasutra, plus some youtube channels.
The site really does smack of nostalgia from people who weren't even there and frankly don't know shit. It sucks because I do like their Asian culture articles, but I just can't stand their clueless hipster ways and their PC bullshit to ever visit. Honestly, I miss Gamepro. I know they could definitely contain a bit of fluff, but not all their reviews were raves and some games were absolutely slammed, it generally stuck to being about the game itself and didn't lecture you about why you should feel bad for who you are and why the creator is an awful person for not representing things that had nothing to do with the game.
Youtube. Why the fuck did people have to make "celebrities" out of annoying fucks like PewDiePie? Now these idiots are actually getting early copies of games from companies to screech over them and not know how to play.
I hate teh censorship natsis. I should be allowed to describe my displeasure at a video game or person in the form of a sex act. As a consumer, I can be free to ignore what sites I hate. That's what people have done with real life anyway.
Yeah, they have gone downhill. I was a subscriber from 96 to at least around 2000 or so, and then on and off a few years after, and used to love that magazine. GameInformer the site is a whole different, and shittier, animal. I guess after we are done listing the places we hate, we should try and figure out exactly where DOES one go to get their fill of decent game journalism these days? Who DOES still preview and review games and hardware and focus on what makes the game or device fun and well made or not, without the social media circle jerk, hackneyed memes, bad trends of "gamer culture" that represent sheep minded mainstream players, and painful cliches?
I like this idea. Although I think it will be quite a harder task than pin-pointing the not-so-good ones. Then again, that's the way it is with everything haha.
Can we talk about the Wiki while we're at it? When I was in college, the Wikipedia was just starting to make itself known, and professors and students alike found it to be a laughing stock. Imagine: A community ON THE INTERNET tasked with compiling info on all subjects HONESTLY. In the beginning, gaming culture treated the Wiki well, and many game articles were huge, providing development trivia, gifs of enemy sprites, and lots of other things that today's Wiki users would find sacrilegious. From there, article squatters and make-believe factions arose. I like to think that the Wikipedia is still a joke among some people. (How can the spirit of all-inclusiveness exist if articles are locked?) Even with that in mind, it's become a force, showing up as the first result on many search engines.
I agree with this. Actually I was thinking about this earlier, there's so many of them that get early previews of games and barely ever play them or know how to. All game news sites are shit anyway, they love reporting on things that are only clickbait. "AMAZING ZERO SUIT SAMUS COSPLAY" or "EXTREMELY SEXY BAYONETTA COSPLAY" articles which seem to be written by horny 12 year olds, let alone cosplay drama is something I'm extremely sick of. Anyone can pose as a geek now with the internet, and claim to know everything since information is quite easily obtainable. Like someone said above me (can't f'd scrolling up, I'm that lazy) IGN were pretty solid in the 90s, and I remember liking the site then. All these new sites have thick as oatmeal communities too. Gaming media isn't really required today, most publishers and producers have twitter accounts which they announce shit on... Which gaming news outlets love to copy and paste from.
