I just bought one of the 360 slims without a HDD, and I want to play original xbox games. I've determined I need a microsoft brand HDD, as only the MS ones have the correct partition/stuff needed to allow original xbox games to run. I don't need the huge 300+GB HDDs that are sold for the slim, as I figure I can just take the 20GB HDD out of its plastic enclosure and use it that way, allowing for backwards compatibility and game saves, etc.

I'm hoping someone with a 360 fat upgraded the HDD and has an old 20GB one lying around taking up space. I'm open to other sizes of official MS 360 HDDs as well, but mostly I'm looking for something cheap that I can buy for $10 or so.

Anyone have anything for me? :)

from what I know the slim HDDs come in case specific to the HDD

you can fit it in the console as is but its hard to get in and almost impossible to get out

or then you could buy a housing from ebay

personally the official hdds are cheap enough to buy an official slim one

Maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but official slim HDDs seem to be very expensive by my standards. Like $60 and up.

The official MS drives are usually WD Scorpio Blue drives with special firmware. The largest seems to be 320GB. I just so happen to have a WD Scorpio Blue 320GB drive I flashed with the Xbox 360 firmware. Should work just like an official drive as the only difference is the firmware. You can have it for price of shipping if interested. I tested it out before flashing and the drive has no bad sectors in it. Was functioning properly when I flashed the firmware over. It is a blank drive with no partitions. The console should format it when inserted. If I'm wrong then someone please correct me as I don't have a 360. I stick to first gen Xbox only. ;D

Thanks sonicdude that's very generous of you! Based on my research, I think the HDD needs to have a 10GB partition for the original xbox emulation - and I haven't read any indication that the 360 would automatically make such a partition - so I'm not sure if your drive will permit booting/saving from original xbox games as is, and I don't really know how to set it up correctly myself. Anyone else have opinions?

I have a 20GB drive for my 360, and I got it from China years and years ago when 20GB drives were over $50. Sadly it's a fake with no XBOX partition :( just be cautious about that and make sure who you buy it from has tested XBOX games with it.

I found out how to format a drive for original Xbox backwards compatibility. Find the article here along with the needed downloads. Says it even works with hacked drives. (Retail drives flashed with the custom MS firmware for 360 operation.) It basically adds the needed partition 2 to the Xbox 360 for allowing of playing and saving original Xbox games on systems that have that function. (Like yours.)

Should work with the drive I'm offering as it has the firmware flashed for 360 operation. I don't know if it works or not but it should since I got a "Flash successful" message when it was finished. If it wasn't then you flash it yourself with this tool and instructions.

These 2 things will allow for playing original games on a 360 with a cheaper standard PC drive instead of needing an official 360 drive as they are the same minus the firmware. The drive I have is what the 360 uses for the 320GB sized one. No worries about getting banned for the drive as there are so many hacked drives floating around out there being sold as official drives that MS can't ban anyone with a hacked drive since so many are innocent and believe they got an official drive. They will ban you if the drive is anything besides a WD Scorpio Blue (maybe?) and is over 320GB (obviously...). Luckily the drive I have falls into the safe zone and therefore won't get you banned.

In the first link there is even a link on the page to an update done to the emulator for those who do not get on Xbox Live with their 360s. If you do get on Live then don't update it.

Thanks for the links sonicdude, I'm fixing up my 20GB drive at the moment.

I don't think you get banned from XBL by not having a WD Scorpio Blue though. My drive is a Samsung HM020GI, at the time of using XBL I didn't get banned and was able to download demos.

I don't think they banned anyone with fake/modded drives because so many people were buying the Chinese drives when they thought they were real (because often times they were sold as being OEM) and if Microsoft banned all those people it would have caused a huge uproar of problems for Microsoft.

I actually helped the Xbox guru here??? I'm shocked!

In all seriousness I wasn't sure about the drive brand. I was just guessing since pretty much all the drives I see for the 360 are WD Scorpio Blue drives.

Of course, also for those people who have OEM controllers which are bootlegs too. MS made them way too easy to copy...

Well you see. I don't know anything about the XBOX 360 (slowly getting into it). XBOX sure, been awhile since I've been modding and testing things on them though - have to get back into the groove.

Just curious... bc I bought one of those 4gb Slims as well and would like to add space. I have 3 spare HDD's sitting around and I thought if I format them to FAT32 I could use them for my 360. (All 3 HDD's came from parted PS3's)

The question is, can anyone vouch if that works?
