I'm at a loss where to pick up a spare chip for one of my SCPH-10000..
quick research indicates that the following chips SHOULD work, but any others (if you've got install diagrams) would be welcome...
I need a direct-boot mod, preferably the dumber, the better.

Messiah 2, Ghost2, DMS3 all seem to be viable options...

    help?

    Thanks!

What about using Free McBoot? That's what I use for my PS2. It's a memory card exploit. You just need a PS2 memory card and find someone to install it for you. It use about 1/3 of the memory card space. Typically you send the card to an installer along with return shipping. No charge for the service.

If you're in the US, I can make a Free McBoot card for you.

FreeMcBoot is nowhere near as good as having a hard mod. He says he needs a direct-boot mod also - a chip basically. Perhaps for betas and stuff? I dunno.

Yeah- I've already gotten freemc boot running and it's just plain dumb and useless... an always-on mod's the way I need to go, hence the topic.

Hm, i'm not seeing that it will work with V0 consoles... if you can provide a wiring diagram and assurance, I'd probably be ok with that...

lol I actually removed modchips from my PS2 consoles after I got used to FreeMCBOOT.

    Modchips-

    Pros:
Boot PS1 discs from CD-R (regardless of region, protection is bypassed)
Boot directly PS2 discs of any kind
Some modchips can force an graphic mode on the game you're trying to play. Homebrewn apps to do the same do exist, but the mod makes it "automagically" for you.

    Cons:
    Are costly.
Incur on risk of damaging the console on install.
Causes the laser pickup to last less than it's supposed to, even with original discs.
Disrupt certain functions of the console.
Disrupt the normal operation of certain homebrewn applications (such as Open PS2 Loader and a few other apps with specific uses).

    FreeMCBOOT-

    Pros:
Keeps the unit original. You save risking to ruin your rare SCPH-10000.
Allows you to run homebrewn which install stuff to the PS2 kernel.
Don't need to be disabled as the console is not modified.
Don't cost you a single penny.

    Cons:
Require you to re-burn the DVDR discs you might already own on a new "format". (ESR format DVD discs)
Cannot start CD-ROM media of any kind.
Require you to learn how to use Micro Launch Elf (uLE)

So, I only kept an SCPH-18000 I have here with a DMS3 chip, but it has a disable switch drilled on the case (this disable switch puts the eject pin of the DMS chip to GND, emulating the user powering up the console with EJECT button pressed.) I only kept that unit modded so I can have an mean to re-do the hacks should my memory card corrupts.

While I don't recommend modchips on PS2 these days I used to be an modchip installer back on the days PS2 was the current gen....

Honestly you want your unit to last as much as it's possible. A chip will shorten it's useful life greatly.

    :flamethrower::evil:<MODCHIP>:evil:

    Edit:
I have no intention of disturbing an commercial trade being realized on this thread.
I am just stating that adding a chip would cause damage to the console in question.
Sometimes commodity for the user is more important than the unit lasting for a long time.

Ah, you're right actually. I forgot he was considering modding a SCPH-10000. I wouldn't touch one myself, I'd only chip a regular console.

I guess RE: laser stress using my TEST will be safest then.

heh i'd agree if i didnt already have another retail 10k in better shape... this one's got a broken pcmcia tab and the systems seem to go for pretty cheap these days, they just dont show up too often...

i'll probably nab the messiah 2 if shipping's not too bad raylyd, can you run me an estimate to the US, zip 20024

I'd have preferred a Ghost2, but they're trickier to track down...
