I am looking for an IDE HDD, to install in my PS2.

I need a fully functional one (no defects)

Storage capacity may vary as long as this is reflected in the price.

    Thanks

You might as well buy a new one in a shop, usually maxtor hdds are a good choice, at least for use in a ps2.
    I'm using a 80GB, model number is 6Y080L0.
But you are not limited is size, unless you want the sony official hdd wich is 40GB.
Here is a list of compatible hdds http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/

    I'm using a Samsung SP0802N (80GB) with 2GB free :)

Never had problems with it. It doesn't overheat, it's very quiet...

Stay away from slim HDD's as they tend to overheat.

LOL i have a SeaGate 80 gig in mine.

That seems to be the populer size for some reason.

Just make sure you dont go with a newer Western Digital. They physically dont fit the PS2 network adapter. The distance between the IDE Connector and the Mollex is about a 1/2 inch to far and there is no way to make it work short of mutilating it.

Just go with something other then WD and you will be fine.

I have installed many HDDs in PS2's for people and always use Seagates as they run great and always fit.

sounds like a sweet price. How much would the shipping cost to england UK? Considering it's an HDD and those things are quite fragile , always.

Also, how can i format it for PS2? I don't own the HD advance set *(yet)

Hdadvance is a commercial rip-off of a free product called hdloader, and you don't really need to buy it if you use the ps1 exploit to launch some memory card file manager, the problem is, the first time you'll have to use either a swap device/hda retail disc/action replay or a console that can accept burned media to set up the whole thing...

being a total PS2-n00b, I think the HD advance offers quite alot of convenience since I don't have the time to really open up my PC case, hotswap discs, dump images etc.

I think i wouldn't mind paying a tenner for some ease of mind.

This comes from the mouth of someone who has been running a softmodded cube off a 0.5MB mem card for the past 2 years.

thanks for clearing things up though unclejun, appreciated :D

If you want better compatibility, you must go for HDLoader 0.8b, the latest version. HDAdvance 3 is just HDLoader 0.7c with a different skin.

Also, if you really want to take advantage of the HDD i suggest you to get:

    - uLaunchELF v4.12 - Must have for everyone. Launch ELF files from pretty much everyway possible (CD, HDD, MC1,MC2, USB, Network,...). It's a very good File Manager

    - SMS 2.0 (rev.4) - DivX and MP3 player!

    - Geotron 0.5 - Geometry Wars clone. Very fun

    - Flashback - The famous Flashback game, ported to the PS2.

    Ouch.

    I don't have a modded PS2.

Is there any way to install 0.8b with the ease of HD Advance? (Or i can always wait for a new HD Advance to come out!) - The key to the issue being that the HD Advance disk is a Silver.

[reminder to oneself to purchase a mem card ]

PS: I read some guides on the subject but being a PS2 n00b, I vaguely understood the terminology of the applications and the steps. I must also stress that I don't have any ISOs nor do I intend to download any (considering some games need to be patched :( )

PS2: If I could use a cross-over cable to access the PS2's HDD, this would be preferable to swapping IDE drives. is there such a way for me? (considering i don't have a modchip)

The main games I want to play really are: Ico, Shadow of the Collossus, GT3 or 4 (not being greedy!) , abd God of war 1 (and why not 2 if possible)

It has been a LOOOONG time since I did this, but here is what I used.....

various free software (actually, wasn't HDLoader ripped from HD Advance?)

    A Memory Card

One of those cheat devices with the card thingumuh (you take the front off your drawer, doable by simply ejecting, then shove the card (with a hook) into the slot under the drawer and pull it sideways to release the drawer without the PS2 knowing, or something like that)

Get the software loaded onto memory card (if you have a reader, great, otherwise burn the boot cd thing that does it). Then you should be able to play from memory card, IIRC.

    p.s. - PMed you on a different subject matter, Barc0de ;-)

No, it was really the other way.

As Johnny said, you need the latest hdloader for god of war 2, something you won't be able to play with hdadvance.

If you buy the hdadvance retail disc, you'll use it once for running ulaunchelf and copying the needed files onto a memory card, and you need a ps1 game as well, sometimes the hk silver disc are not well accepted by the ps2, so booting with a ps1 game won't stress the lens too much.

If you have a compatible usb flash drive, you might want to buy the swap magic instead (version 3.6 or 3.8), it can launch up to 4 .elf files from such device.

You can easily make ISO of your games with dvddecrypter

Yes, as long as you have a way of running code on the ps2, you'll need the soft called hdldump and its ps2 server side hdld_svr.elf, check here: http://www.sksapps.com/index.php?page=hd.html for "lorbogami hdld gui 2.1"
The network transfer of games can be very long for some games, gow2 actually is a 8gB file, installing games directly onto the hdd connected to your computer is of course very fast, if you use an .iso file as the source.

If you're looking to transfer files between your computer and the memorycard, ulaunchelf has an integrated ftp server.

All the games you want to play work fine, the list of compatible games => http://www.ps2hd.com/list/

I have been using HDAdvance 3.0 prior to reading through anything online. A local store recommended it, so I went with it. To be honest, it was a piece of piss to use - okay it cost me £14 in total including P&P, which if you know where to source a free version (or something similar) may come across as a rip off, but as yet I have had no problems with it at all. The only titles it hasn't recognised were crap titles anyway, so no worries.

Clearly, other more sophisticated (or more homebrew) methods exist, but for an almost off the shelf product it has done me fine. Not defending it, I have no vested interest in the product at all. If you can get a cheap copy of HDAdvance then it actually isn't all that bad. If something free can do the same job, then it is clearly a more cost effective alternative.

Ooops, perhaps I should have left that chip on the motherboard! It was definately causing problems however, so....

By the way, I am using a 160Gb Seagate Barricuda in mine and it has been fine.

To go over a point Unclejun made about getting PS2 software onto the HDD. It IS actually a bit of a long process. I dumped a pile of my own games as backups onto the HDD and it literally took all night.

once again, a very helpful post unclejun, thanks!

Does the IDE method imply hot-swapping the IDE HDD? I could set up a rack , like I used to have, but Windows needs to reboot everytime one plugs a new HDD through IDE.

By hot-swapping, you mean connect the hdd while the computer turned on?

You better use an ide to usb2 connector if you don't want to reboot your machine.

yes, hot-swapping as in swapping drives while in the OS.

Is [hot swapping] needed in order to transfer games from the PC formatted hard drives to the PS2 formatted drive?
