Looking to find a copy of the Korean localization of Pokemon Gold or Silver (포켓몬스터 금/은) for Gameboy Color. It was released in 2002 by Daewon prior to South Korea fully lifting the ban on Japanese cultural imports in 2004. I have been having trouble procuring a copy since most of the more internationally accessible Korean auction sites (Gmarket, Auction) seem to only have folks selling imported Japanese cartridges or the HeartGold/SoulSilver DS localization. I'm going to try and reach out to a friend in country to see if they have any luck, but thought I'd check here.

It's hard to find because it's very rare. Daewon only released three GBC games I know of...Pokemon Gold/Silver and Bomberman Selection. The latter is the only which is readily available. I have a decent copy of Gold but not Silver. They don't show up too often. Expect to pay at least 100 USD for a CIB copy when you get the chance.

One other small note, the ban on Japanese stuff was lifted well before 2002. It's why Sony was able to come in and set up shop officially for the PS2 and why the Dreamcast was released by Sega rather than Samsung or Hyundai (yes it was briefly considered by Hyundai after Samsung did not seek to continue the arrangement). All of that was moot after they began to normalize relations with Japan somewhere in the aftermath of the Asian market collapse.

Why, then, did Daewon handle the Korean end rather than Nintendo itself? Well, Nintendo I guess wasn't ready to take plunge as Korea was a rather small market compared to the behemoths of Europe and North America. They later did in 2006 and look how well that's going for them 10 years later...^^

Thanks for all the information, Comboy! That price range is what I was expecting given the rarity I've been seeing from the international side. For my purposes, a playable copy with an intact label is sufficient rather than complete in box. I'm looking for a copy for nostalgic purposes as well as for some glitch experiments.

I definitely would be interested if you're willing to sell, especially given the great condition of the box & manual. I shot you a PM; let me know if there's a price that'd tempt you or if you'd like me to give you an offer amount in PM.
