For the price that one of those would cost you could get a Gamecube, Gameboy player, wavebird and a component cable! Or for way less you could go with a snes and Super Gameboy 2 to just play Color games...

Were these always that expensive, or did they just suddenly rise in price?

Wideboys were not mass produced and were sold to developers and the press...They cost over a grand to buy back in the day and now go for $400-600

from what I can tell, $600 would be a steal for one of these, I've seen them go for (and sell at) over $1000

The GBC ones dont go over $1,000. Your thinking of the GBA one. That one easily goes for around $1250 to $1500

Super Game Boy 2 does not play most GBC games. It will only play the GBC games that have a GB compatibility mode and they will play in GB mode. Also you don't need the official GC component cable anymore, 480p compatible RGB/YPbPr/HDMI mods (GCVideo) are available now for under $60 in parts. You can even get both DIY GC HDMI plugs and premade ones for the DOL-001 units. The internal mod also works on the DOL-101 units too but soldering is harder.

For the N64 I just settled with a N64 GameBooster :p . But then again no GBC compatibility (even thou you can add color to most GB games :D) and if you can stand a horrible loop for sound rather than the actual game music then this is for ya  (kidding of course)
