Exactly as it says on the tin.

I'm looking to buy an Official Sega Dreamcast VGA Box HKT-8100

I have little to no interest in the packaging or instructions as I intend to use the thing and use it often, the side effect is an incomplete item is usually cheaper too yay. I wouldn't pass up on a boxed unit if the price was right though.

I have no interest in a third party VGA box, I have one already. Official only - and none of that fake clone stuff either ;)

    Regards,

Oh great to know that mine isn't fake then :)
I'm surprised that this is worth that much, I paid mine really cheap.

What's the difference from a fake one or an internal mod ?

Nope, it is definitely a fake. The real VGA box has a moulded model number as with every other major Sega Dreamcast accessory. Well except for the Arcade and Twin sticks... because they have a metal base, not moulded plastic.

Even with low volume production units like the LAN adapter and BBA, Sega took the trouble to change the moulded text at the back from Line to LAN - a sticker just wasn't their style.

The only official Sega Dreamcast item I know of that uses a sticker is the Sega Dreamcast console itself - that is because there is one version of the shell but several major versions of the internals (region x VA).

If by some miracle it is somehow real, I still don't want the sticker version, I want the proper, original, moulded model number version only ;)

if this is so, it means that everyone I know in person & every collector on the web has a fake one and NO ONE has every seen a real one coz up until now real ones have the word "Dreamcast" a the swirl molded on one side, & the serial number sticker on the other, can you prove what you're saying by posting pics (not that I don't believe you, it might just as well be that you're right & the dreamcast scene has been wrong for all these years) and an article of sorts that explicitly says it has to look the way you claim?

so at least we know what we're hunting for

oh yes; one last thing: my dreamcast keyboard (which I bought from an official dealer back in the day) has a serial number sticker on the bottom, & my samba de amigo official PAL pack has one too (only to name a few off course. I'm pretty sure I'll find other examples if I dig into my cupboard)...
so far for your "other hardware theory"...

or maybe both are legit, I mean every company has done it before: run a second batch of something with cheaper components (hence revisions of hardware) for the sole purpose to save em money. now I guess a case with a sticker would cost em less than something molded...(just hypothetical here)...who will tell

Umm, my official VGA Box does NOT have a serial sticker and no indication that may lead me to believe it ever had one. With that said, mine has the serial molded onto the plastic.

I never even knew up until reading here that there were Sega VGA boxes with said stickers.

Here's your "miracle", I opened my "fake" one.
Oh my; it has SEGA written all over itsself, just like I said. Maybe next time you should listen to folks who know what they're talking about & save me the hassle with the screwdriver and you would've had your "real" vgabox by now...

I could be a complete ass now & claim the one WITHOUT the sticker to be a chinese ripoff coz I haven't actually SEEN proof of its authenticity; then again I'm not an ass...:triumphant:

That looks relatively easy to build for what it is.

As for stickers on keyboard, I have some somewhere, no idea where. But I did say other *major* hardware. A £3 keyboard with a different connector and a £30 price tag is hardly major :p Also I don't know what circles you hang around in but I've rarely if ever seen a sticker version of the VGA box. Most of the ones I've seen and trust are moulded.

It is entirely possible for a bootlegger to have Sega written on the PCB, and/or sell it in Japan. In fact most if not all of the DC hardware I've opened say Sega in white text but that is neither here nor there, especially given as I have slept since then :p

I have an unofficial VGA box, I've even built my own VGA box. I don't care if yours is real or not because I won't be buying it or any like it but I do hope you are happy with it.

I want an official VGA box but I don't want the alternate "miracle if it is real" sticker version. Only the official moulded one will do for me, sorry ;)

dude honestly...what more do you need. even shinebi (who happens to be a friend in my real life as well & who I've known for years) agrees, and he worked in an anime/games import shop in the days of the dreamcast. he's been cutting open & modding stuff before he could even walk; he's more sega savvy than most folks here on the board but I'm guessing you'll just tell him he's wrong as well....
have you ever thought about the fact that its easier to fake a mould saying "dreamcast" that a pcb board saying "sega"?
where's this "proof" of yours this its real? something isn't just real coz you happen to believe in it (unless you're religious...)

and yeah, like the samba de amigo PAL pack isn't "major hardware"...

Oh FFS. This is a WTB thread, not a who gives a shit if the sticker version is real or not thread, but thanks for the free bump. There may well be a miracle sticker version, but there are plenty of fakes too.

Also you have a warped sense of major. Major was not used in this sense to refer to an object's mass, but its mass production. The maracas are a limited unit. Sure if they're making the mould they could add the text to the mould too, but not everything has a moulded plastic base, such as the arcade stick, twin stick etc.

HKT-01xx Set 4 Prototype Dev box. Sticker model number (VA + metal chassis). Sega in white text on PCB.
HKT-0120 Set 5.24 Dev box. Sticker model number (VA + metal chassis). Sega in white text on PCB.
HKT-0400 GD Writer. Sticker model number (VA + metal chassis). Sega in white text on PCB.

HKT-3010 Jap DC. Sticker model number (VA x JUE). Sega in white text on PCB.
" - blank ext. Sticker model number (VA x JUE). Sega in white text on PCB.
HKT-3020 USA DC. Sticker model number (VA x JUE). Sega in white text on PCB.
" - 56k Modem. Sticker model number (VA x JUE). Sega in white text on PCB.
HKT-3030 PAL DC. Sticker model number (VA x JUE). Sega in white text on PCB.
" - 33k Modem. Sticker model number (VA x JUE). Sega in white text on PCB.

The Dreamcast and modem shells are the same regardless of region, hence no moulded model number. There is a subtle difference in that the Japanese shells tend to say Designed for Windows CE and have a proper jewel on the GD lid whereas the rest of the world say Compatible with Windows CE and have a shitty grey insert.

HKT-7000 VMU. Moulded model number. Sega in white text on PCB.
HKT-7200 Microphone. Moulded model number. Sega in white text on PCB.
HKT-7300 Arcade Stick. Sticker model number (VA + metal chassis). Sega in white text on PCB.
HKT-7500 Twin Stick. Sticker model number (VA + metal chassis). Can't actually see Sega on the PCB but I don't want to dismantle it completely. White text is present though, possibly more on the underside.
HKT-7700 Control pad. Moulded model number. Sega in white text on PCB.
HKT-8600 Vibration pack. Moulded model number. Sega in white text on PCB.

Are we seeing any patterns yet?

    a) Moulded plastic model number where possible, sticker where not possible or impractical.
    b) Sega in white text on PCB when and where found

It is possible for the VGA box to have a moulded model number due to the simple fact that it is made of plastic! It is also practicable because there is only the one variant of the VGA box.

Granted an official item can exist outside these norms but I've yet to find one. You may be convinced you have one but I am not. Also, I am deciding how I spend my money, not how you spend yours.

I want to buy an Official Sega Dreamcast VGA Box HKT-8100 with the moulded model number. They exist. I want one. I do not want any other variation. Is that really so hard for you to understand? =/

course not, however you did not say THAT in your first post, if you had I wouldn't even have posted my first reply. in stead I tried helping you by providing a link to an auction & you say its fake (without any backup). you just keep repeating thet same word over & over, still without even 1 shred of evidence (I can live with that, I have a wife).

then I even go as far as to disconnect my entire shit & screw it open, again just to help you and you still keep coming on to me saying anything on earth, can be faked (I'm quite aware of this, even a moulded serial can be fake.)

my point is you shouldn't attack folks for such a small matter & keep a narrow view on a subject when they go through that much shit only to help a fellow collector out. you could just as well say: "ok, so I suppose there's another version out there, but thats not the one I want." in this case I would simply reply you with "ok, I only wanted to help, enjoy your hunt"

anyway, I just needed to get that off my chest, no hard feelings & enjoy your hunt

I'm going from memory and belief. Lets say proof exists and I spend a fair amount of time tracking down the evidence. Then what? Even if I had a signed and sealed letter requesting moulded model number boxes from a factory, people could then call that fake too. Anything is possible, but everything is subjective.

No one asked or wanted you to do that, nor was I particulary bothered whether you did so or not. It was nice gesture if you were trying to be helpful, or maybe you were just trying to justify your own beliefs, but whatever it was also annoying as it continued to derail my WTB, especially when opening it neither proved or disproved anything anyway -_-

When the sticker version link came up I pretty much told you I don't want it. I also stated a sticker version is not the one I want in post #6, #14 AND #16 but then you went out of your way to discuss otherwise so -_-

It hasn't been enjoyable thus far -_- But cheers, hopefully the fun will start soon!

I really don't have time for pleasantries, I prefer to be direct and to the point. I have even less time when I'm annoyed.

I'll probably come across a VGA box when I'm skint though... sods law FTL!

WOW! Never go into electronics manufacture - you'd go bust!

An injection mould costs thousands just to design and manufacture. And then you have to go to production. It's not worth it for a low volume product, certainly.

Conversely, a PCB is simple to design - you silk screen (or develop) your design onto a board and etch it. Technically, you could do it with careful masking, a PCB pen, a plastic tray and some etchant. Or this:

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/press-n-peel-pcb-transfersystem-13464

    Add this:

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/beginners-etching-set-45873

And you've got everything you need to make a PCB - with Sega on it, if you so wish. And £35 is a lot to be spending on making a PCB... but it beats the cost of injection moulding!

Yeah probably have to wait for an opportunity. The item isn't worth that kind of effort considering the technical facts of how it operates.
