    Portugal here!
Do you think you have what I am looking for?

I recently tried using an external HDD from my PC, using usbextreme.
Then I used the elf image of usbadvance, released by the ps2 scene, but I get lots of bugs and lag by using it..

Hmm, I was checking the hdds compatibility and saw that one of my PCs hdd is compatible it seems..

Do you have the ethernet adaptor? If yes, how much you want for it?

Unless you want to run Final Fantasy XI (and SOCOM, probably) on it, nearly all IDE HDDs will work. HDL (and the offical Linux kit, BTW) don't need the official HDD. The incompatibility of some HDDs is primarily due to the physical location of the power/IDE connectors on the drive not matching the mating connectors location on the network adaptor. It is primarily Western Digital HDDs that are affected by this - I've used a varying assortment of Seagate/Maxtor HDDs (up to 750Gb) with HDL without problems.

Hmm, thats nice piec of info! The HDD I am using is the Western digital, wich giving me trouble. It goes to the game but then the screen turns black.

I need the ethernet modem to try my ide 80gb seagate wich seems to be compatible, from the hdds list.

And if the hdd wont fit just need to mod the network adapter a bit,its very easy.

Ok, I'm confused now  - if you're already at the point where it goes to the game but then the screen turns black, then you either already have the HDD connected to the PS2 via the network adaptor, or you have it connected by USB? And what are you running when the screen blacks out?

A small number games are incompatible with HDL (and it's derivatives), even with patches and will go to a black screen, but you can get similar behaviour if the HDD connection to the network adaptor works loose - however with the WD HDDs that are incompatible, you'd have a hard time connecting them without dismantling your network adaptor - the the connectors are just not quite in the right place (as Pikkon notes, it can be done).

Now, if you're using a USB connected HDD, then HDL won't work - you'll need USB-Advance & the number of games that are incompatible is much higher (plus cutscene video is usually choppy, since the PS2 USB is only capable of USB 1.1 speeds).

I used the WD HDD throughout usb. I was able to play xenosaga for a little bit.
The other times I tried, screen freezed.
With DBZ sagas, I reached once to the tutorial stage, but then the sound got strange and when I left the tutorial mode, black screen appeared.
I also tried DBZ budokai 3, and after some credits, black screen again...

    ...dam

    Edit:
I used usbextreme for formatting/installing game on the HDD + usbadvance to load.
HDloader just works with ide and ethernet modem afk..

    Edit 2:
I need to know, do NTSC ethernet adapters work on PAL PS2s?

Ah, OK - that makes sense. Unfortunately, the USB approach only works about 40% of the time in my experience. Stuff either doesn't load at all, or craps out later.

I've used the same network adaptor on both PAL & NTSC PS2s - you should have no problem there.

    Thanks for the support limey.

Anyways, someone can close this thread as I got an ethernet adapter already and have everything running well on my PS2.
