WTB: Ram for Sharp X68000

Discussion in 'Want to Buy Requests (WTB)' started by The-Old-Arcade, Feb 4, 2008.

  1. I have a Sharp X68000 ACE with 2MB ram however I'm looking to upgrade the ram to at least 4MB so I can use it to play Super Street Fighter 2 that I recently purchased.

Are ram upgrades easy on this computer and how many banks are available on the ACE unit. (I know this model can take upto 16MB Ram)

Does anybody have any ram for this machine available or any idea on the best place to source some ram?

Thanks in advanced to anybody taking the time to read this post and respond.

I dont know what kind of RAM a X68000 takes, but if it's normal EDO RAM you could get it at some flea market or second hand computer shop cheap.

  3. I guess it would make sense to open up the console and take a look at the ram and take a look at the type.

It would be ace if the ram is just standard PC ram (EDO) if that's the case i'll go ahead and put 16MB in :)

It might take 32pin EDO RAM. If it does, let me know. I might have some lying around at work...

  5. Thanks madhatter - I'll check this weekend :)

  6. Update - I tried to take the X68000 to pieces to expose the ram but after I removed all the screws from the base of the unit and rear. I noticed that there are a few screws between the two tower parts of the console.

These are impossible to access without a special type of screw driver so I'll need to source one of these before I can open the machine.

If anyone can save me anytime by finding reference on the net or checking there system board out to find out so I can get the ram ordered i'd greatly appericate it! :)

    Cheers,

    Hey

You can open up the casing without removing those screws. I know it looks like you can't, but you can. This picture might help:

I remember searching about it on the internet and I found a way to do it. I'm having trouble finding the page again now, tho.

Also, a RAM chip just sold on Yahoo Auctions. I saw it and wondered if the system needed this specific RAM or if others would suffice.

    It sold for about $23:

Maybe the part number will help you.

  9. Thanks for that really useful piece of info!

Shame it's not EDO though, Looks like i'll have to sign up to "Shopping Mail Japan" or something to get this item.

I have the ACE model which I think originally came with 1MB. I know it has 2MB now and that the X68000 only has 2 slots.

I hope it's 1 stick of 2MB it would make it easier to find another 2MB now I have the part number.

    Cheers again everyone!
