His asking price at $40 is absurd IMO. At that price it's tempting to use some documents available on the internet and a book on electrical engineering to build my own chip from scratch.

Not difficult at all to get a Saturn for that price and the resale value of a chipped Saturn is very rarely $cost of saturn+$cost of chip. Though this is for personal use at this point.

Otherwise I've had good dealings with him in the past including Saturn chips when they were ~$26.

He does have a good return policy. That is, if you find your chip doesn't work, send him a PM/email and he'll send out a new one. I'm guessing that the increased cost is due to the higher number of defective chips. Someone has to eat that cost.

Anyway, you have a couple of other options (I've used Console Goods before) if someone doesn't have a chip to sell to you. Good luck!

Yeah I noticed that the prices for the Saturn modchips at Racketboy have gone up fairly high. I bought mine from them for $20 I think a few months ago.

Goooood luck with that heh. Just "book" wont be enough and there is almost no info on the internet.
Atm $40 is a normal price for new saturn modchip, you won't find them cheaper. I'm not even sure if they're still being made (last manufacturer was xynga with about $3-5 per chip prices, but they stopped selling them a few years ago).

Just "book" will be enough for me. I was taught to use an oscilloscope in high school and do SMD soldering on a regular basis. I don't exactly pull Steve Wozniak type jobs weekly but I know my stuff.

And there is a LOT of information on the internet if you know where to look. Google searches don't typically turn it up for some reason but I have schematics that were hand drawn by someone a while ago as well as info and diagrams that with a bit of time could easily be turned into a PCB to populate and turn into a functional mod chip.

I just have too many things on my plate to take the time to crank out modchips that may or may not sell for a price making it worth my time.

Now if someone dropped $5-10k into my bank account and said "produce 10k Saturn mod chips by the end of the month" you'd have it done.

    brasilmodchip.com.br

Those guys had a lot of information way back when but now they're offline and archive.org makes it difficult to find anything you need. And the whole being in Portuguese thing makes it difficult to read. Thankfully I've got a half-assed understanding of Spanish that makes it workable.

I've bought 2 chipped Saturns recently for under $60. One off Racketboy forums was sold to me for $50 shipped. The console itself is sold on Ebay for $40 or so and the modchip being $40 is ridiculous for the age of the system. I would just try to find a premodded console on sites like that.

Pardon my interruption, but what does a chipped saturn do for you that you can't do with an action replay ? It is my understanding that I can use an AR to beat region detection and play burned discs, so ... what does the chip get you ?

Be able to boot back-up games without having to swap.

The AR does not give you the ability to play burned discs.

Someone else mentioned Rob Webb, but gave the old site. The new one is
    http://www.consolegoods.co.uk/
Saturn modchips are £12.90 there which is on the borderline of reasonable, in my opinion anyway. $40 is a pisstake.

I've dealt with Rob loads of times before, never had a hitch. His prices are usually "worth of the item + 50%" but such is the way with online retro stores.

Whoops, I thought I had pasted the correct new URL. I can never remember his site name so I always search using "rob webb" which brings up the old url.

Ditto for me. His prices are fair in my opinion.

I did contact Rob and he offered to have one shipped to me for a grand total of $32. $8 less than Racketboy BEFORE shipping costs were added on.

There is just something wrong with an economy where buying the same product from a guy 6000+ miles away using a currency worth 2x less than the owner of the chip is fucking CHEAPER than buying it from a bloke within my own borders. For all I know Racketboy is two states over in Utah and could send it carrier pigeon and it still wouldn't make any difference to the fact that a British Citizen can do a better job.

This economy is past raping our wallets and is now molesting common sense.

I think you mean 20GBP which is roughly $32-34USD since that is what he quoted me. You have to make it known what currency conversions are necessary or else he likely assumes that you're a fellow Brit.

For 2 modchips shipped priority it was $55.62 (£33.72).

I just noticed that the quote he gave me for 1 modboard via standard airmail at £15.72 which translated to $25.32. Think I might grab 2 or 3 and pass on the savings to another poor bastard like myself.

Oh man you're right. I didn't realize he was using pounds instead of euros. I've never bought anything from UK before so I'm not familiar with their currency.
