    hello everyone!

I have a sega cd that works however the drive will not open or shut correctly due to the teeth being stripped on the mechanism that lifts the laser. I was hoping someone has a dead drive or the piece I am looking for so I can swap my working unit. My drive works if i have it open, lift the laser unit, then hold the switch that says the tray has closed, so I really just need the little corkscrew part that lifts the laser up, but a replacement drive would work as well i suppose.

    Thanks!

I know what you are talking about. Had this problem with my PS1 which has the same setup as the Sega CD for the laser. What I did was took all the gears out of the drive, and you should see a very thin metal bar under one of the gears. What you need to do is take it out and bend it towards the gear. That should fix it. Test it before putting it back together by hooking up 4.8V (4x AA holder) to the motor that drives those gears and if it grinds, then you need to bend it again. If you break it or lose it, no sweat. You can replace it with a new staple bent out straight.

What this does is "meshes" the gears closer together. At the factory they have it set to the width of a piece of paper squished between it (at least for 48 pitch gears thats what is recommended) and once it wears down, the teeth get shorter. Pushing it tighter together (but not too tight!) can give it better grip.

Thanks! Ill look into that. Im not sure if its going to work for me though as the gear has 6 teeth like this | | | | | | and my gear looks like this:

    | _ _ | | |

From left to right teeth 2 and 3 are pretty much gone. There is only a tiny nub of the teeth left in those locations. I will give your fix a try though and see what difference it makes :)

Oh. Maybe some epoxy in that shape will work? No clue now.

haha yea i was thinking about how i could fashion something to fit that but figured it might be easier to get a 2nd drive or see if anyone has a parts one. Im guessing this a Sony drive as my working SCD has a JVC laser and has a different mechanism for the laser assembly lift. Im new to the SegaCD repair.

Oh, gotcha. If you really need me to, I'll just sell you my whole PS1 CD drive with a dying (not 100% dead) lens and the part you need, I think, for $5 plus cheap shipping?

A PS1 has that part? The laser doesn't lift in a ps1 though. I feel like it needs to be from a CD tray type drive. I'll post a pic of the part I need in a few

My issue is the Helix screw. Its chiped and missing teeth on the top. Last night i tried to repair the chiped spot with glue as ive seen in other threads, and that seemed to work, however I cannot fix the missing teeth :(
