Finding the trackball i/o board could be very expensive. It's on my want list too, but it'd be hard to come across. To my knowledge, that i/o board was only used for SegaSonic Arcade, and it can go for a small fortune nowadays. That said, if someone could give clear pictures of the top and bottom of the i/o board, it'd be possible to reproduce one using off the shelf parts. The board has no custom chips, and the parts used are still available. I'd personally like to manufacture one for my own use, so that I can burn all the SegaSonic arcade ROM files onto EPROM's and play it on my System 32 board.

I'm not going to find a trackball i/o for segasonic any time soon that's for sure.
But a reproduction should work i agree.

From what I understand, you can use any analog trackball with the I/O board itself. To build a new I/O board, with some good images of the original, I'd literally just re-create a schematic, then pay a couple of dollars to one of the many PCB fabrication houses that are out there now that do small hobbyist PCB runs for a good price. The components and connectors on the board can be easily sourced, and then it's just a matter of a few solder joints and you've got a replacement as good as the original.

In terms of getting Segasonic Arcade running, all you need is any System32 board, the same kind of ROM board used by SegaSonic Arcade (which was the most common one I believe, used by most games I've seen), and a bunch of eproms of the appropriate type to replace the maskroms, which you can then program in any eprom programmer. Of course then there's the protection device to consider. I'm actually the guy who cracked the protection device a decade or so back now, and added support for it in MAME. At the time I did it a guy contacted me and asked me about making a modified ROM file to remove the protection, so that he could use it to resurrect his system with a failed battery. I made the ROM and sent it to him, but never spread it around anywhere, because I was worried about people flogging boards with failed protection devices and hacked roms as "working", which would hinder anyone who was trying to find a system with an intact protection device for research or emulation purposes. That ship has sailed now, as any board that didn't have the battery replaced is long since dead I'd suspect, and the prices for working boards are now well out of reach for most people. Someone else has also recently made a ROM hack too, and I've seen a few SegaSonic Arcade boards sold on ebay recently with huge pricetags using these de-protected roms. The original de-protection ROM hack I did is still sitting on my drive.
