A few dreamcast-saturn cult communities have gathered certain money in order to be able to buy a possible shenmue beta.

Anyone around that sells any? Dreamcast or saturn version?

    Money is waiting.

If you have some and are willing to sell it PM me and we will discuss the price.

This sounds pretty weird to me. Why would a community set up funds and take money from people saying that it's for something they don't even have an offer for yet? No betas of this game have surfaced, and just asking for money for it "in case it ever shows up" sounds pretty fishy. I'd hope my money doesn't get taken to the drug store for booze :p

Also, are you the one that set it up or something? Why advertise other communities setting this all up and then say "MSG me and we'll discuss a price"

    WTF...

This is not fishy dude, we've been thinking about this for along time. Since we now have money we decided to ask if anyone would sell. We're not fooling everyone as the people interested are all friends and we know each other.
This thread isn't for this please don't spam.

Well it has "special menus" that will access areas not accessible without hacking the retail version (and may be different than those hacked areas) and it's on GDR's. I guess it's more of how you define it. Prototype (NO), Beta (YES). Beta is anything different than the retail release, at least by my understanding. :) Sorry didn't mean to hijack the thread. Oh and no, this is the original Shenmue.

Actually that is incorrect. Beta is a stage of development, usually reserved for the test period. Alpha is usually used for the period of development when the game is still becoming structured. The use of "beta" as an umbrella term is one that causes a lot of developers headaches when people ask them questions, as it sounds ignorant. (Not being insulting by any means!)

The best available umbrella term for pre-production games is prototype.

Except it's equally as common for developers to misappropriate the terms 'alpha', 'beta', and 'release candidate' to simply excuse poorly written software. Gmail BETA anyone?

It has ONE "special" menu which is nothing more than a shortcut menu to access any cutscene or location. the rest of the game is the same as the retail US.

Those "secret" areas are test areas also left in the retail ( only accessible through hacking in the retail ) but with that menu you can get to them.
All of them are more or less like this one:

^I love that video. It feels like I'm watching something from TLC though.

I think the main idea is that they've been building up "insurance" for a prototype of Shenmue in case of one arises.

    This is Mr. Obvious reporting.
