Good luck! Hope it works 100%.

Increased my offer for a 32Mbit Super Magic Drive a bit. Have a feeling it won't help much... :)

Yes, earlier BIOS didn't even have all the regular disk functions. The last BIOS includes a "backup test" feature where it will directly backup a game into RAM and run it. This will give a good indication whether or not the cartridge is making a proper connection and whether or not your SMD is working.

It will certainly be easiest to find a 24M model which many people seem to find with ease (I am not one of them) and upgrade it yourself.

CF, if I ever come across another SMD, you'll be the first to know :)

OK, I couldn't find a Genesis AV cable so I had to make one, but the SMD tells me it has 32m upon boot. I'm going to go ahead and say at this point it's definitely a 32m model.

Does it have the 4.1-A BIOS?

Yep, it's got that. I forgot to mention that. I also just booted up the DPF I got, looks the same as my MD+ on the Genesis side, though that's to be expected as they are both CCL products.

Would you really need to upgrade a 24mbit SMD for the whole 20 games that big? I'm mean I'm sure there are more than that which are 32mbit or larger, but which ones do you really have to play? I actually looked myself and at the most there are maybe 10 games larger than 24mbit I'd want to play. But maybe it's the thrill of knowing you have a 32M. ;p

There really are about 10 games, and half of them are EA games :) I say yes, it is worth it since 32M is the max the Genesis can address natively.

Today I bought out the SMDs; scratch everything I misremembered :)

-Hardware 1 ONLY supports 8M I think, it will detect the old model 16M DRAM with the last BIOS but will not play even 8M games correctly!

-Hardware 2 supports 8M and the old model 16M DRAM only. It does not support MUXless DRAM over 8M.

-Hardware 3 supports MUXless DRAM but may need the decoders to select the RAM. My hardware 3 is quite borked so I can't be too sure :(

That would be awesome! Congrats with a confirmed *working* 32M SMD :) I am always a little worried about leaking batteries...

    Thanks for the update Calpis!!

There's nothing like empirical copier research :) Hope you keep on giving us technical details. I am hungry for it! ;-)
