Actually most of the 'prototypes' that are sold were given to game magazines for reviewing so it isnt like these were only in the dev's hands. They arent that hard to find, you just need to talk to the right people and do some investigative work to track them down.

BTW I may be getting a Medieval 2 beta if you'd be interested. Havn't decided if I'm going to keep it or not.

Nope. Betas as in early versions of games burned to CDrs and given to game magazines for reviewing to cover games as they were developed.

Rarely is a proto disc dirrectly from the developer since there was little need other than hardware testing to burn it on a disc. Most were burned onto a disc specifically for the gaming media, whether it be a press conference, E3, or Gaming Magazines.
