Anyone have a Video CD model of PS1, SCPH-5903? They're kind of hard to find, even on eBay. (Especially because people keep labeling their gray systems in auction listings as SCPH-5903...)

I'm trying to get one PS1 of each color, like I always wanted to have as a teenager. I have blue and midnight blue, so I'm down to black, green, and white. Black and green are just a matter of waiting until a decent auction shows up on eBay / Yahoo Auctions Japan.

Needs to have parallel port cover.

Sure, I guess I'm a collector in that regard, but like, what would a Yaroze be useful for these days? It's easier and better to get Psy-Q and a modded gray system. Even if you wanted to use the Yaroze SDK specifically, you're better off converting its executables to PS-X EXE and running them through Caetla, which can be done with any pre-900x PS1.

Also, I would try to reverse engineer the video CD player. I'm quite curious of what is different about its CD controller and/or BIOS that lets it read non-Sony disks in data mode. I'm not just a collector. =)

DefectX doesn't have the parallel port cover for the 5903.

    I'm interested too. :D
But i think it's nothing special at all. Only an aggiuntive board (like the D.I.Y. psx vcd card) with same bios (or little mod) and cd controller ;). But it's only my teory...

Agree. In those days yaroze it's only for collection purpose. Way better and cheap a normal modded psx for coding purpose...
I don't know people what have aganist collectors :p

A collector doesn't use EVERYTHING they get. I have an XDK I have no idea how to use, but enjoy owning one. Just look at how many people own a NR Reader and have no idea how it works or how to use it.
Either way, what's wrong with owning the Video CD Playstation? Oo

Myria, I remember seeing one some where it was either eBay or some Japanese online store - right now I'm looking for you :)

I do, but it's not for sale & IIRC the parallel port cover is not white.
    Good luck finding one though.

fwiw the bios has been dumped.

AFAIK the BIOS is the same as other models; the VCD player is not part of it (probably part of the mechacon or some other chip?).

    Im intrested in this.
Myria is on a good track of wanting to know more about vcd in the ps1, just get the hardware and see what can be dig up.
afterwards it can be a nice collectors item :D
    Its like Archaeology, for electronics.

I'ts my supposition also. It's sure that VCD emulation it's done with an extra hardware. My supposition it's that a scph5903 is only a normal mobo (scph550X?) ( with an extra hardware to reproduce VCD ;)
But if i remember correctly, scph5903 has RCA output also. Right?

Presumably, the BIOS is different, to provide UI. Also, I have to imagine that the BIOS reads the disks and feeds the data to the daughterboard for decoding. I'm quite curious how the BIOS is able to do data read commands on non-Sony disks such as VCDs. The CD controller must be different somehow, in theory.

I'm curious because you can trasform a normal Playstation in a VCD compatible model, only adding an extra device trough PIO port (i don't remember the device name) without modding or soldering nothing on the mobo.
If there's someone can help me to solve those doubts it's you Myria! ;)
