    I get the following response

"Your computer already has an operating system installed, which can not be upgraded by this version of SETUP. You need to obtain the Windows 98 Upgrade"

Are you booting to the windows 98 Cd from Bios?

You need to boot from your hard disk, and then run the installer

Just running from when cd inserted it autoruns

How would I run it from BIOS?

  6. Heh... How quickly people forget.

The reason you can't install it is because Microsoft, for all versions of Win9x, had three versions... Upgrade, OEM, and Full.

Upgrade only allows you to upgrade.

OEM only allows you to make a fresh install (After all, if your an OEM, you aren't upgrading anything. [This is your case])

Full allows you to do anything in terms of install.

Would I have to do this from the DOS screen?

If so how do I get to that again?

  8. Yes, from DOS. The link I posted is a DOS boot disk. Simply put a diskette into your floppy drive, run the exe from the link (which will "write DOS" to the disk), and reboot with the floppy in the drive. As long as you didnt somehow make the bios skip booting from the floppy drive, thats all you will need to do to get a DOS environemnt.

That will erase your disk though. You could probably save your data by just doing deltree C:\windows. However this wouldn't retain software installs, you would have to reinstall software no matter what, unless you can find a way to upgrade rather than format +reinstall
