I convinced my wife to wait in the cold rain at 2 PM to get one. I think she would pack up and move out if I sold it for a $60 profit.

doesn't it feel weird to be making money this way though? just seems weird to me, people buying up extra stock for the resale leaving those that wanted to buy one at the shop for what it was worth 'out in the cold'. yeah yeah I shouldn't take the moral highground and all that - it's just weird people looking making a quick buck out of the online communities they belong to. ebay is one thing, this is quite another. I'll shut up now.

I see your point, but I guess the reason some of the guys bought 2 wasnt specifically to sell it here, but more likely to sell it on ebay. And if they know they can get X on ebay, they'll want at least something approaching X from here. Its hard to clasifiy people on here - for me at least, i don't see you as the same as my "real life" friends, purely because I don't know you as well. But then you aren't anywhere near strangers on ebay. so while i may have sold a 360 to a mate for $450 or something, On ebay I'd sell it for $600 minimum, and on here somewhere in between.

Also consider the hassle some people went to get them - I'd want $100 or more for waiting outside in the cold/rain, and then weighing and posting the item.

ok, this I can stomach. it's not so much maxing out as making a bit for troubles and efforts etc. I can understand this.
plus what you say about how people are viewed (strangers as opposed to 'real' friends, and the in-between which is what makesup an internet community) is also coherent - though it is important to protect a community's interests by upholding certain basic values which include being balanced and outspoken when necessary.
I did not take into account that resellers where not looking for the amounts garnered at ebay, so I'm hessitant to maintain my stance.
it had to be said though ;)

Personally I bought a premium for myself, and my brother wanted one too. There wasn't an extra premium, just a core. I bought it for him thinking it was fine, but he didn't want it. So I put the core on eBay, and ordered another premium.

I'll never understand the core system myself. Can't imagine why *anyone* would want one of those, unless they were getting it for half price. Just not worth it considering all the extras you get with the premium edition.

    Basically.

Up here it's $399 for core, $499 for Premium. If you want a media remote, it's $39.99. HD is $129.99, wireless controllers $59.99 each.

Granted the media remote is a universal one and the one in the premium bundle is a bonus, but still it's pretty substantial

The core system is only intended for the parents who don't know the difference and think that $400 is too much for a game system.

I used to be very giving to the online communities I was involved in. Not only hooking people up with items that they were looking for but giving away hundreds if not thousands of dollars in items for free. Then I tired to buy a few things I wanted and everytime the person (often a person I hooked up or even gave items for free) told me he could get more on eBay. I won't get into the details of the transactions only to say that these days I still do take care of the people who take care of me but there are few people on this list.

As for the 360. This isn't a homekeepers/cooking website. Everyone here knew the deal. We all knew they would be hard to find before cmas and we all knew the steps needed to ensure you got one at retail price before cmas. If you didn't get one then you either couldn't afford it and then still won't be able to get it or were too lazy to get a preorder well ahead of time or to wait in line overnight. A buddy of mine paid a high school kid $50 to wait for him !

I own game stores. That's how I make my living by buying and selling so its not really an "extra buck". The economy in Cleveland has been shitty for months and we needed this "extra cash". Anyway my wife and I got 3 of these. Not preordered or from my distributor but from waiting in line outside in the freezing Cleveland rain all night (ie not fun yet an option available to all). Is it wrong to plan ahead and buy something like this to make an "extra" buck? If it was something people needed to live (food and water during the hurricanes) I would say yes but no one needs a 360. Its a luxury item. I won't even keep one for myself as I think the price is too high right now. I'll buy one when they are $50-100. I still don't have a PS2 .

consider the fact that there is a 'shortage' - and alot of people feel the compulsion to buy 'something' the core systems are selling and on ebay they are hitting significantly over what they cost at retail. so from a business angle - if only with this first batch - it makes sense - you sell it all - the cheaper package is not that much cheaper but the content which it lacks forcing the consumer to purchase means extra dollars. it's all win win. as crazy as this all may be. no one would really choose the core package over the premium package I think - but if you have little choice and want to play this new system you may well have to bite the bullet. and that's what is happening.

Of course the smart thing to do would be to wait a few weeks because the "shortage" is more perception than anything else. Folks doing what BuyAtari is doing (buying and immediately reselling) are being smart about it and taking advantage of desparate buyers that have to have it "right now."

More restocks are coming every week, so if you have a 360 in hand that you plan on selling for more than retail, do it sooner rather than later. With each weekly shipment into the channel the resale value of the system in your hands will drop tremendously.

ofcourse it will, but this is very well orchestrated and preplanned. nothing has been left to chance. it leaves the 360 looking like a resounding success, causing all kinds of crazy behaviour - selling out completly - and causing the 'desperate' to buy without thinking too much about it. with this 'mental shortage' I bet there's a fair few people who would have wanted to wait but where caught up in the madness and put their money down.
its not about being smart. Microsoft are the smart ones here. consumers are sheep - this is not an insult - I mean, there are people who dedicate their lives to studying consumer behaviour and how to herd the flock. fact is for MS this is the most important - or one of the most important - moments in the life of the 360.
