So I got me a cheap mc for PS2 today. Datel Max Memory 16MB, it included a Bonus disc containing "10 retro games" for PS2. I got a bit interested in the disc and opened it up on my PC. In a folder called RES I found another folder called DELETE_ME in this folder I found ROM.GBA.. "Wtf does a gba rom do on a PS2 disc?" was my first thought. So I launched VBA and loaded the rom. and lo and behold! Metroid Fusion boots up! h: Big misstake datel :fresh: So I continue to scan the other folders and find a folder called FINAL that contains 10 more GBA ROMs, it apears that these ROMs are the "10 retro games" and they've just thrown together a GBA emu for PS2 and 10 homebrew GBA games on a disc.
After doing some more browsing I've come to the conclusion that either this disc contains a memory card browser and some weird communtiy thing that is hidden (the internet/community thing might show up if I connect a network adapter to it? Unfortantly I have none) It also seems according to the manual for the disc and seeing some of the images on the disc that you can submit hi-scores to some server. I havn't found how yet though (again might be b\c I don't have a network adapter). Also foud a image in COMMON saying "Memory card activated... insert PS2 game now"..? Really weird disc.
I got a memory card (possibly datel) when the ps2 was not out very long (it was cheaper than official one) and it required you to have to insert the disc in order to use the memory. Thats probably what the image is for but i may be wrong but looks that way As for the retro games i can't help much there as mine never had any retro games or i don't remember it having any but it is kinda weird.
Could try to dump it. Yeah I suspect that too now when you mention it as I remember reading something about it. Though this MC doesn't need a "boot disc" to use
just a thought and i'm probably wrong but could this disc have been originally used for another product and they have just altered the contents of it and then used it for this memory card instead of making a whole new disc??
Epic fail on the dump, three programs failed and the last one crashed my computer when dumping. I guess it's datels extra copy protection they got on all their discs. Can do a file copy of all if anyone is interested. Dumping seems to be a pain in the.. Can't speak for the Metroid rom but the rest of them are the "10 retro games" that you can play on the PS2.
Seems like even though the computer crashed it still managed to rip enough to copy all the files. Tried to mount it using DAEMON tools and everything seems to be there. Will try to upload it somewhere.
note: I wouldn't recommend trying to burn this to a disc and boot it, don't know if that would work. ^_^
Indeed they work on my GBA emulator. Reminds me of when that Echelon.txt file was found in the Sega Smash Pack Dreamcast GD-ROM dump. Do you have a photo (or online picture link) of the disc?
Hmm...has anyone thought of the fact that a few Nintendo people likely lurk on this form...and as such, they probably know about this...and, as they are Nintendo, may try to lay some sort of smack down upon Datel?
