Idol's have to keep up their appearance of being attainable for all the thirsty Japanese guys, so it's pretty obvious that it would be in their contract to not be allowed to have a boyfriend. I don't see anything wrong with this at all, she violated her contract and thus has to pay the fine.

That's still WTF You don't see that shit with American popstars, if anything fans speculate on who Popstar X is boning. Chalk it up to cultural differences. It's still pretty WHAT THE FUCK?

So even if you have a crush on J idol X she can't date you because, Contract. At least with Maria Ozawa you have a chance because that's her job........

On that note I hear there's a Male Pornstar shortage in Japan.

I don't like idols myself, but I don't see much wrong with this. I understand the reasons this is part of a contract in this kind of business.
If you're uncomfortable with a contract like this, then you shouldn't sign it.

If the whole idea of being an Idol to make guys think they have a shot at you, why even have this clause in the first place. I can't speak for the Japanese mindset somebody more in the know of it should fill me in. But generally speaking if I crush on a celebrity which I usually don't if they have a significant other, the waiting for the break up is part of the fun then when the break up happens, the moment of MAYBE I HAVE A SHOT.

I don't know if that's a western mindset or something guys regardless of culture go through.

So that's all I have to say about that unless somebody chips in with some cultural commentary on this.

Because sex sells baby! But to be honest the Japanese approach of "attainability" through celibacy (not in a religious sense, of course) is better than the western approach of twerking on stage in front of teenagers with a tit hanging out.

Although I'd agree that the idea of a virgin being specifically more desirable is pretty archaic and doesn't really apply to me either.

    Oh boy...

Also I don't see much wrong with this. She wasn't fined because she had a boyfriend, she was fined because she broke the rules of a contract. The reasons for such contractual obligations are certainly rooted in the way such popstars are marketed in Japan's pop culture, but it still doesn't lift their responsibility. She knew that this has to be taken seriously, as she entered an industry that has been around for over a decade in the same style and with the same image rules. She broke it, so pay up. 650k yen is pocket change for a JPOP-star anyways.

Well shall we discuss the Japanese prison/arrest system?

    Japan business model is fantastic:
""Discovering romantic relations damages the image of idols," he ruled. "To gain the support of male fans, clauses banning romantic relations are necessary." Kojima blamed the girl for the dissolution of the idol group and fined her for part of her clothing and lesson costs."

Given that I find pachinko exceedingly boring (it's like pinball without the flippers), and only play mobile games on the toilet or the bus, yeah, I'll agree I have no grasp of the Japanese.

Well apparently if you're arrested in Japan they won't let you go until you confess. I have no idea if that's even true or not, as I've heard conflicting stories about exactly how law enforcement handles things in Japan. When I took Japanese I heard that the Police pretty much know everyone in the neighborhoods they work in and thus, don't arrest anyone until they absolutely know for sure the arrestee is guilty.

But that's only what I've HEARD, I've also heard guards in Japanese Prisons are particularly nasty. But I've heard all sorts of things about Japanese Prison all of which turned out not to be true.

The beauty of research. Being able to validate information is a wonderful thing.
Who are your sources on this? Also, is this topic turning into a platform for shaming Japan regarding parts of their culture that aren't "correct" by whatever standards we're ascribing ourselves to?

I am not walking up to Japanese people and saying EVERYTHING ABOUT YOUR COUNTRY IS WRONG. Lets be honest, there are things about Japanese culture that even to those who study it from afar and have Japanese friends, just do not make any sense.

Anywho my sources on all this are unreliable..........YOU TUBE videos and documentaries of questionable origin.

Right....so what was your point in bringing it up then? It's hardly "WTF JAPAN" if it isn't even true..
