I am in discussion with someone over an alleged X-BOX Dev kit like the stash that GAVROCHE + OLDENGINEER HAVE Does anyone know what these would cost if bought from M-SOFT new?
Lots. and lots and lots. Sony PS2 dev units are around 20k, so i heared. Not sure if that's £ or $ tho. So i imagine between 10 - 20k. Maybe..
Isn't that because by buying the devkit you are also buying the liscence to develop for that system, though?
Yup. Still lots. M$ won't even sell you one unless you're an actual devco, and sign all sorts of non-disclosure contracts and stuff. Normal mateys off the street can't just go and buy any dev kit, even if you did have a spare $20k. And yeah, Deathcoaster is right, you're also buying a licence to develop too. These reasons are also why Nintendo/Sony/M$ are rather jarred when devkits show up on ebay. Why you want it anyway? Looks just like a normal Crystal Xbox. If you wanna develop Xbox games, a normal retail box can be turned into a devkit....
I believe, if I remember correctly, back when they had that contract that allowed any company that was signed up to dev for them to buy as many dev kits as they wanted, they were somewhere between $500-700 each - I think $599. However, was that the Dev Kit or the Debug Box? I think it was the Dev, not sure though.
You need to supply a bit more detail m8. Not all Dev Kits are the same! ...They may look the same externally, but differ internally. This affects the price dramatically!!! For instance a DVT4 kit fetches considerably more than a DVT3 kit, even though a DVT3 is regarded as historically being rarer. ...In reality a DVT4 is more sought after, at the moment, hence you can expect to pay more for a DVT4 than a DVT3. ...In a few years time when the Xbox isn't in production the DVT3 may well catch up in price, just as in the case of most Dev Kits. As for the original price, thats simple... Roughly speaking £10k buys you one complete Dev Kit, a license to dev and all the support you could wish for. (this includes software, updates, etc) ...Oh and before you ask, a Debug Kit is considerably cheaper!
Shocking price, when you consider it's essentially a normal retail Xbox, with an extra 64MB ram and a debug bios. Bah...
