360 is capable of six processing threads, two per core.

The launch games use only one thread, or 1/2 of one cpu.

During a talk on multithreaded programming, Microsoft used the three core, two thread per core Xbox360 as an example.

The bombshell was that the first generation of Xbox titles, all of them, are single threaded.

This new generation of console is just stupidly rushed , I'm not surprised at all that first gen games or even second gen games will be single threaded, that's the first time this industry is using multi-threading on a massive level.

There is a lot of architectural ground work to be done here, developpers and architects almost have to start from scratch.

Several developpers, mentionned that they would have been better off developping on an Intel P4 or AMD64 CPU rather than the IBM multicore ones and achieve same or higher quality.

I agree with the Enquirer I'm worried that the PS3 will be a disaster in terms of software, the PS2 launch was crap also anyway, remember Ridge Racer V beurk...

I'm not too excited with the new generation of consoles, I think they didn't get the most of the current generation look at Resident Evil 4, Shadow of Collossus, graphically impressive games, I'm sure current gen could have been exploited for another year or two, time for everybody to get a good understanding of new concepts like multi-threading.

Again we gonna crap from the beginning, which confort me in my decision to wait...

I'm kinda amazed that they say that the games is single threaded.. b\c I've worked with plenty of game engines and none of them have been single threaded. just sounds strange.. o_O

  4. ...Peeps seem quick to 'forget' that the 360 launch titles are/was/were 'originally' intended for the current Xbox!

...It's gonna be a little while before the full power of the 360 is used, the point is the HW is ready, it's up to the Dev's to use it as and when necessary :)

yeah MS pushed a bunch of stuff back to ensure they had some good titles for their launch. This is just enhanced xbox titles. Now it kinda justifies not buying a 360 until MS drops the price when the PS3 is launched.

Well, this is good to hear. Xbox was nice, but what disappointed me the most about it was that graphics never seemed to get better. First gen games look about as good as current ones.

Yeh. It really shouldn't be looked as dissapointingj. THe programmers didn't have enough time.

Maybe around third generation, 1-2 years, all the games coming out by then will be utilizing all cores the 360 has to offer.

We will be seeing the true power of the xbox360 unfold, and which is why I think it will kick PS3 in the long run.

    Huh?
Take a game like Splinter Cell 1 and compare it to Splinter Cell 3. The texture quality and lighting effects are vastly improved over what we saw in the first batch of games.

I just hope we don't have to wait four years for them to get up to speed.
