in a conference at the Microsoft Windows Hardware Engineering Conference 2005 (or winHEC), microsoft officially told that the xbox 360 pad were to be compatible with the next windows, for now named longhorn via wireless adapters. and i say they can go to hell with their plans of standarizing everything. cahaz_
Why? As long as its a decent good standard then its fucking usefull. I buy a xbox 360, i wanna play a game on my pc then i can use my pad and not have to buy one. Its a good idea specialy if its open to 3rd parties.
i wonder if the new xbox is going to have the same 'black box' longhorn has? my xbox seems to have a will of its own allready, i can imagine secret information being transfered via the controler from xbox to pc...and from my pc to the void. think about it, you plug in your xbox controler into your pc and the next thing you know the feds are braking down your door...or even worse microsoft sells your profile to marketing companies and privacy as you know it is history.
Sounds like a kick ass idea to me. Or do you rather prefer paying extra in having to buy some dumb adapter to use your console controllers on your pc ?
This is certainly one area where I support Microsoft. PC pads are generally crap in comparison to console ones, it'd be nice to get a decent pad on my PC.
will the controllers come with some bluetooth adapter or something? cuz those pads is going to be wireless (which I think is stupid cuz you are going to need to change battery/recharge them all the time)
We call that sort of logical fallacy a "slippery slope" - i.e., 'because X is true or is possibly true, then Y will happen." Your cellphone could just as easily broadcast your phone calls or even record sounds around it when not in use, your cable or satellite TV could send broadcasts of everything you view to a third party, etc. etc. If you're paranoid enough, everyone's out to get you in the end. Personlly, I find it much more sane and constructive to worry about important things - like will these fancy pads be backwards compatable, either natively or with extra drivers, for non-Longhorn PCs - rather than thinking everyone's out to get me, but I suppose that's just my opinion. Then again, using a wireless controller as a medium for Microsoft or some other giant, evil corporation to gain access to your innermost private details is not in any way a ridiculous idea. In a more useful note, I wish console companies would get off of this wireless kick they're on - I personally prefer something with a cable if it means that I don't have to recharge the controller/battery or worry about the controller failing in the middle of the game. Some technological improvements are helpful or useful - like Internet connectivity - and others are just gee-whiz useless.
I also cna't stand wireless controllers - tried a few for xbox and they just don't have a proper 'feel' or weight ratio compared to a wired - oh yeah and they don't rumble either and if by some miracle they did then you would have to be replacing batteries a hell of a lot. The other gripe with wireless is there is a greater chance of interference when you're in the middle of gaming - there are many things around the house which can absorb/shield radiation or maybe they would just interfere with other devices. To top it off, batteries only have a finite life span - you can only recharge them so many times before they are useless - will we be able to replace the battery or do we have to buy a new pad each year when the battery fails? In the spirit of profiteering I suspect we wil lbe charged for the full pad =/ Anyhow, backon topic I can't really see a problem with making the controller good for PC's too - PC pads tend to suck hardcore and atleast it would save on buying/building an adapter.
