Now that I've also got a component box and cables for it, I wanted to use my old Xbox again. I had kept it stored away in the house for the past 5-6 years (dry and cool place). It used to work fine before but now at first it wouldn't power on at all. When I pushed one of the buttons there would only be a light clicking noise and a hum as long as the button was pressed. Yesterday I decided to dissassemble it and turn it on with the HDD and DVD drive unplugged... and it suddenly worked. Put everything back and it still worked fine (played around in the menu and tried some emulators for maybe 30min). Today it won't power on again. No clicking this time just a barely hearable hum. Took it apart once more but no luck this time. Any ideas what could be wrong? Is it the power supply? The Xbox is softmodded and appears to be a 1.4 or 1.5 model (Falcon video chip).
check to see if the memory supercap has leaked and maybe caused some damage / corrosion, but it could be power supply maybe dry joints?
No leaks or any other visible damage. The thing is that it worked briefly for the mentioned period. Hmmm. Anyway, I got a another Xbox for cheap locally and use that one now (ver. 1.1, was very dusty inside but gave it a thorough cleaning and now works like a charm - flashed the TSOP and now enjoying SFC games in 720p). Thanks for the reply.
