Red/orange is either bad ram or a bridged pad. Go over the pads with some flux and a hot air reworking station (if you have one) or a really fine soldering pencil.

I've done many a ram install for people back in the day. Was one of the few people doing them on X-S.

I've seen this happen when the system had nothing to boot from, what happens if you turn it on with a game inserted.
I guess this is a little late seeing you already removed the ram.

    I dont understand this post.

    Xbox works
    Install more ram
    Xbox doesnt work.

Fault is quite obviously the ram install...

    Not really..
    Xbox works
    Installs more ram
    Re-assembles incorrectly, or HD corruption
    Xbox doesn't work.

Put a CD in to bypass the hard drive boot to confirm its the ram.
I got an Xbox on my bench that does the same thing, boots 3 times then red/orange, but will boot fine off a CD.

    Xbox boots
installed new ram (with hot air station, flux, vacuume tools and a thermocouple)
    wont boot
    removed ram
    won't boot

yeah I'm just trying to boot bare bones ATM (no dvd or hdd)

im going to remove all the ram and swap modules around.
still won't boot with hdd and dvd (games will boot but no picture or sound / still red and orange)

You can boot them without a hard drive and it wont do what is happening for the OP. I have done many 128mb upgrades. After all, the bios boots and then unlocks the hdd (as its not accessible until its unlocked). Which means the console will boot without the contents of the hdd being available.

Also, removing the original ram doesnt mean there arent shorts left on the pads - which is probably the problem all along. Or you have damaged some traces during the install - which will still be present after you remove the ram.

So yea, its a bad ram install..
