A friend gave me his old Xbox with a softmod and would like me to fix it and return it to him. It's a Conexant encoder with a 256 KB flash ROM. When booting up, the kernel is giving error 9, which people online say is an error relating to the partitioning with the larger replacement drive.

With the drive locked, and the key long since lost, there isn't a whole lot I can do.

I'm guessing that this error 9 is related to the larger drive during startup before the kernel hack has loaded, since that comes from the Dashboard's font files. I saw no indication that the /WR or /WE lines were closed, so the on-board flash probably is stock 4817.

Would flashing a kernel fix this, by having a kernel that expects the partitions from the beginning?

Also, how can I flash it? I have a SmartXX LPC mod. However, I've long since lost knowledge of the tools required. I think it involves attaching a wire to the flash's D0 line and bringing out of the system so I can access it. I boot the system up with D0 grounded so that LPC is used to boot (SmartXX), but how do I flash the on-board TSOP after that? I know that this can be done, because I recovered a DVT4 motherboard with a bad flash a decade ago somehow. That board of mine still has a wire on D0 going nowhere on it for that purpose. (I should remove that, since wouldn't that make like reflections or something?)

You cant flash the onboard tsop when you boot from LPC. Only exception was the MatriX or the 20 odd wire modchips.

    My suggestion would be either:

Dump the eeprom with external tools and then repair the hdd contents.

    or

Install your modchip, boot from DVD. Then FTP and fix the HDD contents.

Once you are back to a working state, flash the tsop (save exploit or softmod)

What is special about the MatriX that it could flash the on-board TSOP as an LPC mod that the other mods can't do?

What might be wrong with the hard drive's contents?

    Thanks for the reply =^-^=
